State’s need strong for adult education

One message Romig wants to get out to the public is that 28 percent of the population in Louisiana reads at the lowest level of literacy.

“At this level readers stumble over words such as ‘cat’ and ‘dog,’” Romig said. “Louisiana has too many people who are considered illiterate, or whose ability to read, write or do math problems falls at what is considered the lowest level of literacy.”

The reasons for school dropout, and hence, illiteracy, are varied, ranging from poverty to emotional issues which impair functioning.
