Technical-Sergeant Joseph Andrew Javens, age 49 of Ruston, joined our Lord, Monday, June 13, 2011. Joe Javens was born in Rochester, Pennsylvania on August 2, 1961, second oldest of four sons, to Joseph Leroy Javens and Edna Rae Rose Javens. He served in the U. S. Air Force for four years then entered the reserves for 23 years, where he was stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base in the 917th squadron in Bossier City, LA. Always a hard worker, in retirement he spent his last three years managing Sports Zone, first in Nashville, TN, then opening a new branch at Pecanland Mall in Monroe, LA, where he enjoyed picking on customers about their favorite sports teams, for as far as he was concerned, the Pittsburgh Steelers and LSU Tigers were the only correct choices. He loved God, his country, and his family. Anyone who knew him could count on seeing him during football season in his Steelers jersey and LSU hat. Always teasing and never afraid to tell you what was on his mind, he was a great husband, brother, father, son, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He was preceded in death by his mother, Edna Rae Rose Javens, and grandson Dante’ Anthony Alexander Parker and in-laws Benjamin F. Merritt and M. Jean Barbaree Merritt. He is survived by his wife, Kay Javens of Ruston, LA; three furry babies Steeler, Benjamin Troy, and Ellis Ewe, father, Joseph Leroy Javens of Freedom, PA; three brothers, Mike Javens of Shreveport, LA, Ken Javens of Wichita, KS, and George Javens and fiancée Cynthia Samir of Norfolk, VA; six children, Darren Baker of Bossier City, LA, Chris Baker of Miami Beach, FL, Shawn West, of Denver, CO, Misty Welch of Malibu, CA, Alex Hottle and fiancée Bridget Copeland of Ruston, LA, Jeannell Ferguson and husband Jason of Simsboro, LA; seven grandchildren; seven nieces and nephews; and several aunts, uncles, great nieces and great nephews.
Memorial service will be held Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 10:00 a. m. at Owens Memorial Funeral Home in Ruston, LA. Dr. Andrew Johnson will be officiating the service. To leave a memorial message for the family, please visit www.owensmemorialfuneralhome.com.
