Mavis Elaine Baxter Dowling, a life-long resident of Lincoln Parish, went to be with the Lord on March 26, 2011 after a brief illness. A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at 2:00 P.M. in the Temple Baptist Church Chapel with Rev. Dale Oden officiating. Burial will follow at the Douglas Cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Visitation with the family will be held before the service beginning at 1:00 P.M. Mavis was the 6th of 8 children born to Zedekiah (Edd) and Mary Stuckey Baxter. She was a graduate of Charity Hospital School of Nursing in Shreveport, Louisiana and was a Registered Nurse for many years at Lincoln General Hospital and later as a nurse at the Green Clinic working with Dr. Henry Roane. Mavis was happily married to Louis Dowling for 59 years before he passed in 2004. Mrs. Dowling is survived by three children: William (Bill) Dowling and wife, Sandy, of Shreveport, Louisiana; Frances Dowling of Houston, Texas, and Linda Gilley and husband, Otis, of Ruston, Louisiana. Her grandchildren are: Ronnie Dowling, Denise Barnes and husband Terry, Kevin Dowling and wife Karen, Jamey Telford and wife Traci, Joe Dan Telford and wife Ashley, Jeremy Telford and wife Kristen, and Leslie Telford Colwell and husband Wes. Great-grandchildren are Jonathan Barnes, Emily Barnes, Dillon Telford, Allison Telford, Preston Telford, Alexis Telford, Mason Colwell, and Autumn Claire Colwell. Mavis is also survived by one sister: Velda Bennett of Shreveport, Louisiana and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Mavis was always known for her dedication to both her family and her profession. If anyone has a "calling" to be a nurse, it was Mavis. Friends and patients will remember her soft, soothing voice and touch, as well as her gentle spirit. The family extends special thanks to Alpine Guest Care, the Russ House, Agape Hospice, and Dr. J.V. Jones for their loving care. Memorials can be made to Agape Hospice of Temple Baptist Church Children's Building Fund.
