Event helps area smile brighter

In this day and age, how many chances do you get to receive anything for free?
More importantly, how many times have you received for free something as expensive as dental work?
It happened last weekend as dentists and support staff from Peach Tree Dental in Ruston brightened the smiles of 100 area residents by providing a free teeth cleaning, tooth extraction or tooth filling to those who braved near-freezing temperatures to take advantage of the offer.

Classic films teach life lessons

As many know, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was handing out the most sought after awards this past weekend for a few entertainers in the movie industry. I am going to go out on a limb here and say many of the major cable channels were honoring “The Academy” by playing some of the greats.

Parish playoff slate still busy

Dubach girls, five boys’ teams remain alive in postseason

Five Lincoln Parish teams remain in the boys’ division of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association basketball playoffs.
As good fortune would have it, all of those squads will be on their own courts Tuesday night for quarterfinal round action.
Ruston (27-6) will meet Scotlandville (29-1) , Choudrant (28-12) will tangle with Castor (35-5), Dubach (10-17) will go up against Sicily Island (28-4, New Living Word School (29-11) will battle against Family Christian (25-14) and Simsboro (26-6) will play Midland (28-7).

Tech women No. 4 at WAC meet

Francis, Smith lead way with gold medal performances

Louisiana Tech University’s track and field team for women finished fourth, while the men finished six as action wrapped up at the Western Athletic Conference indoor track and field championships that ended Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M.
The Lady Techsters won two gold medals on the final day of the championship meet and finished in fourth place, scoring 95 points. Texas State won the women’s team title with 122 points scored. The Bulldogs finished sixth overall with 48 points. Texas-San Antonio won the men’s title with 159 points scored.

RHS compiles 3-1 mark at New Orleans tourney

Ruston High School’s first action on the baseball diamond for the 2013 season proved successful last weekend.
The Bearcats played four games in the always talented New Orleans Tournament and came away with three wins.
Ruston took wins of 12-1 over Shaw, 9-6 over Rummel and 8-0 over Chalmette.
In their only defeat, the Bearcats lost to Jesuit 4-2.
Ruston will resume action later this week with the huge Trey Altick Classic that will be held on several area diamonds, start Thursday and conclude Sunday.

Scare sends RES students to NLMC

Children taken to hospital as a precaution after ingesting Easter egg dye tablets

Ruston Elementary School officials erred on the side of caution Friday morning after four students ingested what apparently ended up being Easter egg dye tablets.
Lincoln Parish School Board President Danny Bell said a teacher saw four students in her class spitting out colored tablet residue and they also had some on their hands.

LPFD training new firefighters

New firefighters with the Lincoln Parish and Grambling fire departments were thrown into the fire Thursday night during a training session at the Lincoln Parish Fire Department Training Facility off of Louisiana Highway 33. The firefighters spent time in a small, blazing room filled with smoke before going through the above training scenario looking for victims trapped in a burning building. In the picture, a Fire Captain points out orders as the young firefighters experience the realistic training exercise.

Rehabbing city streets

Grambling receives pair of block grants

Whether biking, driving a car or walking to a destination, those who travel down West College Avenue in Grambling should feel a little bit safer thanks to two grants recently awarded to the city.
“These were really competitive grants,” Mayor Ed Jones said “And the projects are 100 percent funded through these grants.”

Area higher education evolves throughout Black History

Although founded after the Civil War, Lincoln Parish emerged with a moderate mix of various demographics, much as a result of settlers residing in the area before the official founding.
Like most southern municipalities, Lincoln Parish’s racial relations underwent many horrors, along with positive milestones, as the decades passed.
Each February, during Black History Month, the nation celebrates and reflects on the many contributions of a select segment of society, along with their struggles and triumphs to become equal citizens under the law and in the eyes of their fellow countrymen.
