Tech sprints to NCAA meet

Francis, 400-meter relay team lead qualifiers

Kim Francis was speechless.
She had a good reason to be that way, too.
On Saturday, the sensational sophomore hurdler for Louisiana Tech University clocked 13.4 to finish No. 12 in the 100-meter high event at the NCAA’s annual East Preliminaries in Jacksonville, Fla.
A day after having registered a personal best of 13.23 in the first round of that event, Francis wound up in the top dozen and earned a berth in the NCAA’s outdoor championship meet set for Des Moines, Iowa., June 6-9.

RPAR has full summer ahead

School may be out, but Lincoln Parish youngsters will still have plenty of activities to keep them busy during the summer months.
Credit it to the Ruston Parks and Recreation Department, because — as always — the organization has a full lineup of events scheduled before the 2012-13 school session returns in the fall.

Be proactive with grieving child

in

Question: My husband was killed nearly a year ago, and my 11-year-old son is still having a difficult time with it. Before the accident, he was always cheerful and social and hardly ever complained. That still describes him, most of the time, but every now and again he slips into moods where he is just the opposite.
These episodes occur once every couple of weeks and last for a couple of days, on average. I took him to see a therapist a while back, but I saw no change after three months of weekly sessions, so I took him out. When these moods happen, we talk about how special his dad was and how much he misses him, but I don’t think I’m making any headway. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Marigolds not actually repellent

in
Stockton, Gary.jpg

I received a phone call last week from a very confused gardener. Their first statement to me was that they must have purchased the wrong type of marigolds this year because their garden was being eaten up by insects.
Now just a quick history note here. One of the oldest home remedies to repel insects from a garden was to plant a border of marigolds. It was thought that the marigold would repel insects.

Fast forward to criminal charges

One of my business classes taught me that the average person is exposed to more than 3,000 advertisements each day. We view billboards while driving, product placement in our favorite television shows or movies, flashing ads on our websites, ads in newspapers, commercials on television and radio shows, as well as hundreds of other places where advertising might pop up.
As far back as when the VCR came out, people around the world have been enjoying their favorite television shows even if they were unable to sit down and watch them while they were broadcast. VCRs, and more recently digital video recording devices, also allowed individuals to skip commercials.

As the temperatures rise, more skin will show. Summertime has a funny way of sneaking up and if residents are one of the countless number that are not particularly ready to show their “beach body,” the Ruston Parks and Recreation department may be able to help.
This year, RPAR is offering Aqua Zumba and Zumba Gold. These Zumba classes are also designed to help with health and fitness goals.

Know the signs of an abuser

Faircloth, Debra.jpg

Recently, I spoke to a school group about the warning signs of batterers. During my presentation, a young man spoke up, “Why does everything on your handout say he?”
At this presentation, just like all my other presentations, I’d begun by explaining that all of us at DART recognize that women sometimes batter, too; however, because the vast majority of perpetrators of interpersonal violence are male, it’s just easier to say he. Studies of this issue vary, but most experts who study family violence say that anywhere from 85 to 95 percent of perpetrators are male.
