Reforms needed to rein in debt

Gov. Bobby Jindal recently revealed his legislative package to revamp the way Louisiana funds its state retirement plans. His proposals aim to tackle accumulated unfunded pension debt that began accruing back in 1936 with the creation of the teachers’ retirement system. Eventually, additional systems were established, including those for state police, school employees and rank-and-file state workers.

CDA program helps children in Africa

Second grade
Mrs. Blackwell’s second-grade class is getting excited about Valentine’s Day. We decorated valentines to put on our bulletin board, and we can’t wait for the Valentine’s Day Party. We are also doing well in our subtraction facts and have been working on double digit subtraction.
Additionally, we are all moving up in our reading levels. We published our non-fiction stories last week, which were full of interesting facts. We are really getting prepared for third grade!

“Above and Beyond the Call of Duty!” That’s what Ruston Junior High’s Principal Tim Nutt has to say about Officer Eldridge Hardison. Hardison currently serves as RJH’s school resource officer, but he does much more than what his job description entails. He has been a deputy for 12 years, the last five in Lincoln Parish.

Tigers’ coach, star receiver gain SWAC awards

GRAMBLING — Grambling State University’s football program is still basking in the spotlight.
Just ask Doug Williams and Mario Louis.
Williams, the Tigers’ head coach, has been named as the Coach of the Year and senior wide receiver Louis as the Student-Athlete of the Year for the Southwestern Athletic Conference for the 2011 season by the Pigskin Club of Washington, D.C.

’Dogs, A&M game to kick off 2012 slate

Louisiana Tech University and Texas A&M have a late August football duel in Shreveport to kick off their 2012 season.
In announcing their complete non-Western Athletic Conference schedule on Wednesday afternoon, the Bulldogs revealed an Aug. 30 battle against the Aggies at Independence Stadium.
Because of a national or regional telecast, a kickoff time for the Thursday night meeting has not been determined and will be announced at a later date.

Dubach girls rank No. 1 on state power list

Dubach High’s girls are making a strong case to be one of the participating teams in the annual Louisiana High School Athletic Association basketball finals that will be held in Lincoln Parish next month.
The Lady Hornets (27-5) are No. 1 for Class C in the state power rankings announced by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association on Wednesday.
Dubach has an overall power rating of 17.80 to edge out Pelican (17.61) for the top spot.

Good times set for ball

Proceeds will benefit local youth

Each year Ruston residents are able to join together for what some like to call “a grown-up prom.”
The Ruston Civic Symphony Society will present their annual Mardi Gras Ball at 7 p.m. Feb. 18 at the Ruston Civic Center.
Entertainment for the night will be the Buddy Terzia Band. The event is black-tie optional and reserved tables are available for groups of four or more.
