Retirement income — when will I spend it?

Question: I read somewhere that on average I need 70 percent of my working income in retirement. Does that sound about right?
Answer: Last week we began examining this issue by identifying four bases you need to cover in your planning for retirement income: you need contentment for emotional health, a baseline budget for financial health, and a budget for both expected big stuff and unexpected bad stuff to make sure neither causes your financial house to collapse on your head.

Visit to Quebec, Miss., stirs old memories

On our way home from a weekend getaway to Mississippi, my wife and I exited Interstate 20 for a stop in Tallulah. As we approached the on-ramp to get back on the interstate, a sign abruptly changed our plan. That particular on-ramp was closed, necessitating an alternate route west toward home.
Highway 80 parallels the interstate and we proceeded along the highway with cotton and soy bean fields stretching for thousands of acres on either side of the road, making for an impromptu but enjoyable side trip.

Committee discusses courthouse renovations

The Lincoln Parish Police Jury Public Property and Buildings Committee took no action on a vote to authorize solicitation for letters of interest and statements of qualifications related to architectural and engineering services for renovations of the Lincoln Parish Courthouse.
Courtney Hall, parish administrator, said renovations to the building are beginning to become necessary.

Fallen tree damages home

A large tree crashed through the roof of this duplex located at 1601 Tech Farm Road on Thursday afternoon. Ruston firefighters had to cut through several limbs and a door to free the occupant from the home. The occupant was uninjured. Eric Brazzel, RFD’s public education officer said the occupant was fortunate not to have any injuries, and the home is off limits due to possible collapse. Officials do not know what caused the tree to uproot.

‘Eat mor chikin:’ Chick-fil-A opens its doors Thursday

Ruston native and local franchise owner Jeremy Telford will open the city’s first standalone Chick-fil-A restaurant Thursday, bringing 86 new jobs to Lincoln Parish and the chance for 100 adults to win free Chick-fil-A meals for a year.
Cindi Pickett, of CP Communications Inc., said that before Chick-fil-A officially opens its doors, the management wants to give back to the community.

Closing arguments

Robbery, attempted murder case nears end

Closing arguments were set to begin at 9 a.m. today in district court in the attempted first-degree murder and armed robbery trial of Steven Devon Hardyway.
Hardyway, 25, is charged in the Nov. 4, 2015, robbery and shooting at the Subway restaurant on West California Avenue. The victim, who was the first witness to testify Tuesday, was both shot and stabbed during late-night incident.

NCLAC announces upcoming film screenings

NCLAC is eager to participate as a screening partner with the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers again this year, with our first film set for Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.

Rain pushes Bulldogs inside

Louisiana Tech football fans will have to do some studying in getting to know to the new offensive playmakers on the team, but one position they will not have to worry about relearning is running back.
With the departures of guys like Ryan Higgins at quarterback and the dynamic wide receiving duo of Trent Taylor and Carlos Henderson, there are two running backs who will be returning to Joe Aillet Stadium to carry the rock for a fourth year — Jarred Craft and Boston Scott.
