I will ever loyal be to Tech

I have dreamed of the day I would receive my university diploma for a long time. For a while, it felt like the day would never come, but now it is here.
I will be graduating from Louisiana Tech in a week and I am a bundle of mixed emotions. I am ready to be done with school, but I am terrified because that is all I have ever known. This will be the first time I am completing a year of school and do not have to think about going back.
I am going to miss Tech and everything it has to offer.

Life lessons learned at local event

When I was a sophomore in high school, I had absolutely no idea what it meant to be an adult.
I never had to worry about paying bills, making a budget or deciding on a car payment.
Those lessons were learned after I got married.
Sure, my parents taught me a little about being fiscally responsible and when I went to college, I had to make some money decisions for myself, but nothing like the real world.
It’s not my parent’s fault, it is difficult to explain money to a teenager and have them fully understand the consequences of their actions.

Citizens’ Academy builds community

The Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office and 3rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office wants you.
And in return for your participation in Citizens’ Academy 2017, the LPSO and the DA’s office guarantee an all-inclusive look at law enforcement from the inside out and a demystification of the local criminal justice system.
Deadline to apply for this year’s academy is March 3. Academy sessions will be Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30, beginning March 28 and ending April 18.

Lady Panthers start strong

Ruston, Choudrant, Simsboro fall in girls prep playoff action

Ninth-seeded Lincoln Preparatory School wasted no time in taking control Thursday night as the Lady Panthers roared to a 72-29 win over 24th-seeded Montgomery in prep girls Class 1A playoff action at the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
Jade Anderson led the way for Lincoln Prep with a triple-double — 23 points, 10 assists and 10 steals.
Amber Collinsworth added 20 points, 11 rebounds and a steal for the Lady Panthers while Jesse Anderson added 18 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals.

Techsters top FIU, 76-52

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Kierra Anthony scored 19 points and Ashley Santos added 13 points and nine rebounds to lead Louisiana Tech to a 76-52 win over Florida Atlantic in Conference USA action at FAU Arena Thursday night.
Alexus Malone added a double double with 12 points and 13 rebounds to spearhead an interior post game that saw Louisiana Tech (14-11, 9-5 C-USA) outscore Florida Atlantic (4-20, 0-13 C-USA) 48-12 on points in the paint.

Counselor to speak at upcoming NAMI event

Conference to challenge stigma of mental illness

The Ruston chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will host a free educational seminar at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Lincoln Parish Library.
The guest speaker for the event will be Tiffany Bates, licensed professional counselor and assistant professor in the Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Department at Louisiana Tech University.
Her presentation titled “Unmasking Mental Illness,” will discuss the way people perceive those with mental illnesses.

Library board elects officers

The Lincoln Parish Library Board of Control elected new officers during their regular meeting Wednesday.
James Pilgreen was elected as chairman, while Dave Guerin was elected vice chairman of the board.
Charles Penuell, former chairman, said he was happy to have been of service to the library and looks forward to continuing to serve on the board.
After the election, Vivian McCain, director of the library, discussed January statics with the board.
“There were 19,626 patron visits and 27,440 items were checked out in January,” she said.

Applicants sought for Citizens’ Academy

Participants get inside the look at criminal justice system

Lincoln Parish residents who want to get an inside look at how the local law enforcement and criminal justice system work have until March 3 to register for Citizens’ Academy 2017.
The four-week course is free of charge and open to all parish residents age 18 and over who have no felony convictions. The first 20 applicants who meet the program’s criteria will be accepted.
The Citizens’ Academy is a program of the Lincoln Parish District Attorney’s Office in partnership with the Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Super 1 Foods scholarships

In honor of Black History Month in February, Super 1 Foods is introducing the “Because History Matters” scholarship program, which will provide tuition assistance to high school seniors planning to attend college in the fall.
The scholarship is open to any graduating high school senior in Texas, Louisiana or Arkansas, with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. Applicants must be enrolled in a junior college, four-year institution or an accredited technical college by fall 2017.
Scholarships will be awarded to students in the three states where Brookshire’s operates stores.
