People with metal illnesses can enrich our lives

If you are living with a mental illness, do not despair.
Millions of people are just like you. Numerous notable consumers/ peers have enriched or continue to enrich our lives. You also have a contribution to make to society.
National Alliance on Mental Illness, a nonprofit, grassroots, mental health organization with more than 1,200 local affiliates nationwide, states that mental illnesses are brain-based, medical conditions that can disrupt a person’s thinking, feeling, moods, and ability to relate to others.

The Vietnam War: It is worth learning about

The year I was born, the French withdrew their military support from Vietnam. By the time I started first grade in 1960, the Vietcong had formed under the name of the National Liberation Front for South Vietnam.
I was in high school when the Tet Offensive occurred and the Viet Cong scored a psychological victory over the U.S.
It was also the year that peace talks between the North Vietnamese and Americans took place in Paris, that President Lyndon Johnson did not seek re-election and that Richard Nixon won the presidency.

LMA award belongs to us all

It’s always nice to be recognized by your peers for doing good work. That’s the pleasant situation the city of Ruston found itself in during last weekend’s annual Louisiana Municipal Association convention.
Ruston was one of 11 municipal governments that took home the LMA’s most prestigious award for outstanding municipal improvements and accomplishments. The city won in its population category for the Moving Ruston Forward infrastructure improvement program.

Tech’s Kgoale trains at South African camp

With the first fall practice for the Louisiana Tech women’s soccer team set to get underway in a week at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex, defender Nomvula Kgoale was recently able to get her training started earlier.
The native of Polokwane, South Africa, was invited to participate with the South African Senior Women’s National Team (its nickname us Banyana Banyana) training camp that was held in Johannesburg from July 23-28.

Former Bulldogs head coach Bicknell hired by Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss. — Head coach Matt Luke made his first hire since taking the reins of the Ole Miss Football program, naming Jack Bicknell Jr. offensive line coach last week.
Bicknell comes to Oxford with 31 years of coaching experience, including 24 years in college and most recently seven seasons in the National Football League.

LSU honors former Bearcat Moore

Senior fullback to wear second No. 18 jersey for Tigers this season

BATON ROUGE — LSU will have two No. 18s in 2017 as senior J.D. Moore was presented with the jersey at a team meeting on Sunday night.
Moorem a Ruston High School product, will join defensive end Christian LaCouture as the two No. 18s for the Tigers this year. LaCouture was presented with his No. 18 jersey during the spring.
“This team has a number of guys who would be a perfect fit to wear No. 18 for the Tigers and I am very proud that both Christian and J.D. will get a chance to do that,” LSU coach Ed Orgeron said. “The leadership they have shown makes them both a great choice.”

McCown signs with Cowboys

OXNARD, Calif. — Former Louisiana Tech standout Luke McCown said last month during a visit to Ruston that he hoped to get one final chance to join a Super Bowl team contender before hanging up his cleats.
After 13 seasons playing for five different NFL, the 36-year-old McCown is getting that chance after signing with the Dallas Cowboys.
The Cowboys signed McCown to replace fellow veteran Zac Dysert, who herniated a disc in his back on Thursday.
McCown, a native of Jacksonville, Texas, admitted he had hoped the Cowboys would be one of those contenders who might give him a shot.

Police Jury narrows treasurer candidates to six

The Lincoln Parish Police Jury narrowed down their list of candidates for parish treasurer to Kathleen Dupree, Megan Wiens, Wade Smeltzer, Stephen Walker, Emily Smith and Nettie Russell.
The action came during a special meeting on Monday.
The candidates current jobs and where they are from was unavailable this morning.
The jury will contact the candidates to set up interview times and then conduct another special meeting to select the parish’s next treasurer, said Courtney Hall, parish administrator.

Belton elected to DA’s board

Third Judicial District Attorney John Belton has been elected to the Louisiana District Attorneys Association’s Board of Directors. The 3rd District is comprised of Lincoln and Union parishes.
 “I am very honored to be elected to the executive board where all the final decisions are made for any action taken by the association,” Belton said.
 Belton is the only district attorney in northern Louisiana serving on the board. His term begins Aug. 15.

Lincoln Parish School District sees rise in Advanced Placement students

The number of Lincoln Parish students who are taking Advance Placement classes continues to rise, schools superintendent Mike Milstead said Monday.
More than 100 students were placed in AP classes at Ruston High School, Simsboro and Choudrant schools.
“Our classes for AP are probably the most rigorous in both Lincoln Parish and statewide,” Milstead said.
“They’re challenging classes, but students can benefit off of them.”
