Open enrollment: A great time to review retirement plan

If you work for a medium-to-large company, you may now be entering the “open enrollment” period — that time of year when you get to make changes to your employee benefits. Your benefit package can be a big piece of your overall financial picture, so you’ll want to make the right moves — especially in regard to your employer-sponsored retirement plan.
Take a close look at your 401(k) or similar plan, such as a 403(b), if you work for a school or a nonprofit group, or a 457(b), if you work for a state or local government. And keep these possible moves in mind:

Local wins General Manager of the Year

Thomas Earle, general manager of the local Ryan’s, has won the first-ever award General Manager of the Year Award for Ovation Brands.
There are 324 stores across the United States and many metrics were used to determine the winner including guest metrics, operations, financial and team recommendations and observation.
This was the first time in company history that this was done and Earle’s name will be the first on the trophy.

Local LSMSA student honored

Natchitoches — Students at the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts earned quick cash recently as they were asked randomly to recite the student pledge. If successful, they were presented with $5 by Pat Widhalm, executive director.
Widhalm challenged new and returning students in August to learn the student pledge.

National Merit commends local students

Ruston High School seniors (from left to right) Rachel Hegab, Barrett Moore and Liam Norton were recently named National Merit Commended Students. All three students are ranked in the Top 5 percent of the 1.5 million students who took the PSAT last year. More than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise.

Logger Certification classes set

The last chance for master logger certification for the year will be Oct. 28-29 and Nov. 5-6 at the Country Inn and Suites in Pineville.
Pre-registration is required for this four-class series that costs $160.
These classes are offered for loggers and foresters to get training that is recognized by several certification programs.
The Louisiana Forestry Association is the facilitator for the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certification program that provides these training classes.

Fun at the National Night Out Block Party

I’m hyped up, wanting to tell you about a wonderful fun time I had this week here at Churchill Estates.
We had an amazing National Night Out Block Party. I understand it is usually held in August, but because of the Texas heat, it was postponed until 4-7 p.m. Oct. 7.
