Boys and Girls, Cedar Creek celebrate

Lincoln Parish and area residents have been enjoying a variety of social activities recently.
Recently, the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Central Louisiana hosted a variety of events to celebrate Boys and Girls Club Week. The events were designed to emphasize the importance and value of the club to the Ruston community. To learn more about the Boys and Girls Club call 255-2242.

Relay aids community

Brittany Copponex began to chair the Lincoln Parish Relay for Life in September of 2013 and said she could not think of any better way to give back to the community.
“I love the community and I love being involved and what better way to do it than to be a part of conquering cancer?” Copponex said.
A mechanical engineering major at Louisiana Tech University, Copponex has been a part of many academic and philanthropic organizations, but said when she visited the annual Relay for Life event in Ruston for the first time several years ago, her passion for fighting cancer began to grow.

LLC teacher battered

The Lincoln Learning Center on Mayberry Street was the locale for the battery of a school teacher on Thursday.
At approximately 11:53 a.m. the Ruston Police Department responded to a disturbance at the center.
Sgt. Clint Williams, public information officer with RPD, said upon the arrival of officers it was discovered that Tytiyanna Angeleic Mays, 18, of 116 Wright Road, No. B, Grambling, had started a fight in the cafeteria with another student who is 15 years old.

Garden sale set for Saturday

The annual North Central Louisiana Master Gardeners Plant Sale will be held from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday at the Ruston Lincoln Parish Convention and Visitors Bureau, located at 2111 N. Trenton St.
In addition, Rosemary’s Kitchen will provide lunch, pets will be available for adoption from the Union Parish Humane Society and the Outdoor Wilderness Learning Center will be on site selling ferns.  Bluebird and bat houses will also be available for purchase.

GSU graduation speaker announced

Moraine Valley Community College President Sylvia Jenkins will deliver Grambling State University’s spring commencement address in May.
“We are privileged to welcome Jenkins back home to GSU as our special guest and graduation speaker,” GSU President Frank G. Pogue said.
“She’s a stellar academic, a great leader and a remarkable example of the type of professionals grown at our institution.”
Jenkins will speak at 10 a.m. May 9 in the Frederick C. Hobdy Assembly Center on the university campus during the spring commencement ceremony.

Bulldogs primed for T-Day Game

Annual spring intrasquad contest set for 1 p.m. Saturday

The coaches have divided and the friendly trash talk began Thursday as the staff drafted the teams for Saturday’s T-Day Spring Game at Joe Aillet Stadium.
It will be Red vs. Blue Saturday with a lot on the line in the team’s final scrimmage; the losing team will hold a car wash later this spring, washing the winning team’s cars with the money raised from all other cars washed being donated to a charity.

Bearcats blast Lions, 11-0

Seth White and the Ruston High School Bearcats took a 11-0 road win at Ouachita on Thursday. The teams will play another 6 p.m. game tonight at the RHS Baseball Complex before closing out the series at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ouachita Parish High School. White had a double and a triple in Thursday’s win for the Bearcats.

Tech to break ground on End Zone facility

The halftime entertainment for Saturday’s annual T-Day Spring Football Game will be a little different, but it will hold some significant value for Louisiana Tech faithful.
During halftime on Saturday, University President Les Guice, Athletics Director Tommy McClelland and a number of dignitaries will participate in a ground breaking ceremony for the south end zone project.
The facility is the centerpiece of the University’s on-going “Quest for Excellence” capital campaign geared toward greatly enhancing athletic facilities.

Changes for Masters as tourney begins

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The 2014 Masters is missing a thing or two.
Ice damage killed the Eisenhower Tree on 17 a few weeks ago.
A bad back got Tiger a few days ago.
Speaking of animals, Monday it rained on Augusta National like cats and Georgia Bulldogs. A gray, soaking, pine pollen washer.
But like Ike’s Tree and Tiger Woods, the bad weather and all its effects were gone by Thursday’s opening round, leaving the joint open for some early April golf magic, all the history and beauty and legend the year’s first major championship is so famous for.
You know: all that lore stuff.

Lady Techsters’ Vucinic earns Conference USA award

Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced Thursday that Louisiana Tech senior guard Jelena Vucinic is named one of 16 student-athletes that will receive the C-USA Winter Spirit of Service Award.
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league’s student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport.
