Four longtime leaders hang their hats
Ruston and Lincoln Parish saw the retirement of four longtime officeholders during 2014 and the subsequent election of new leaders, both at City Hall and in the 3rd Judicial District.
In March, Mayor Dan Hollingsworth announced he would not seek a fourth term in the fall elections, thus ending a 16-year run as Ruston’s mayor.

Tenants lose home in apartment fire
A structure fire began at 620 Henderson St. in the Drew Apartment Complex evicting tenants out of their home permanently.
At first only a small group of tenants were asked to leave due to the damage caused by the fire.
But after an investigation by the state fire marshal it was determined that all of the 16 units in the Drew Apartment Complex were a fire hazard.
The complex stayed on 24-hour fire watch for a week after the fire first sparked.

Starting off the New Year the right way

Out with the old and in with the new. As 2014 draws to a close and the new year kicks off at midnight, now is a time for reflection.
While parties are set to be held and resolutions are to be made for 2015, individuals can find ways to better themselves.
This an opportunity for residents to reflect on 2014 and remember how the time was spent in the past year.
Today should be a time of reflection on places visited, people met and changes that were made.
Resolutions to create a better persona can be made in the new year.
There are a few ways to aim for success in the new year.

New Year’s resolutions for Ruston

For most of us, New Year’s resolutions aren’t worth the paper they’re written on, but maybe the City of Ruston can buck that trend when 2015 draws in a few hours.
After all, it will be a new day at City Hall, and not just the kind of new day that’s marked by clocks and calendars. Thursday, which beings in the middle of tonight, is the first day of the first new mayoral administration Ruston has had in 16 years.

ATLANTA, Ga. — Kaela Davis scored 35 points and Zaire O’Neil added 20 points to lead Georgia Tech to a 96-81 win over Louisiana Tech Tuesday afternoon in the championship game of the Georgia Tech Holiday Classic at McCamish Pavilion.
The Yellow Jackets (10-4) used a pair of big runs — a 22-2 run during a five-minute stretch midway through the first half and a 22-5 run during a six-minute run midway through the second half — to pull out the win.

Techsters’ Redgen named All-State

BATON ROUGE — After leading the Lady Techsters for the entirety of the 2014 season, Louisiana Tech’s senior outside hitter Rebecca Redgen has been selected to the 2014 All-Louisiana College Volleyball Team, which was voted on by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
The team was selected based on nominations from the sport playing schools in the state and then the media relations/sports information personnel voted on the list of nominations, but could not vote for any of their athletes.

LPFD: Mobile home a total loss in fire

A mobile home on Loraine Drive was destroyed in a fire on Monday afternoon.
According to reports, the Lincoln Parish Fire District responded to a fire that erupted at 12:22 p.m. Monday at 301 on Loraine Drive.
“The first unit on scene reported a fully involved mobile home fire, and within minutes the fire was under control,” District Chief Donnie Watson said.
“The mobile home was not being occupied at the time of the fire, and no smoke detectors were noted.”
Watson added that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Sanfords answer a higher calling

For Lincoln Parish’s Erin and Jeff Sanford, it’s all about the calling.
The calling to each other and family. The calling to those in need. The calling to University Baptist Church. The calling to God.
Those are the things that mean to most to this couple, married for 30 years
Jeff Sanford grew up in Carthage, Texas, while Erin Sanford grew up in Houston and met and married in Longview, Texas.
It was Jeff Sanford’s mom and dad who brought the couple to Lincoln Parish 27 years ago.
