Bearcats, Lions to square off tonight

Senior wide receiver/kicker Jordan Raggio (with ball) and the Ruston High School Bearcats and Ouachita Parish High School Lions will meet in a District 2-5A showdown at 7 p.m. tonight at L.J. “Hoss” Garrett Stadium. Both teams stand at 4-3 overall and 1-1 in district play.

Ruston High School swimmers captured a team first in the second annual Bulldog Aquatics High School Invitational held at the Lambright Sports and Wellness Center on the campus of Louisiana Tech University Oct. 11.

RHS teams split with Neville

Ruston High School lost a junior varsity game but won the freshman contest in a doubleheader played Monday at Neville High School in Monroe. Running back D’tallion Dade (22, pictured above) and the junior varsity fell in their contest while Tekiren Evans (41, pictured below) and the freshman team won their game 14-6.

Local educators host panel for Tech

The Lincoln Parish School District recently had several of its educators serve on a special panel for teacher candidates enrolled in Julie Holmes’ Classroom Management course in the College of Education at Louisiana Tech University.The university students posed questions to the gathering of veteran educators who serve in various capacities throughout the district and have been recognized for their excellence in leadership and instruction.

I.A. Lewis: 4-H officers named, leadership celebrated

Susan G. Komen Fundraiser
I.A. Lewis proudly raised hundreds of dollars for the Susan G. Komen Foundation through daily student jean and staff jean passes for $1. During the culminating ceremony last week in the I.A. Lewis gymnasium, more community donations poured in. Almost 30 breast cancer survivors and family members walked during our Think Pink assembly including guest speaker Annette Warren, who set up a special display, gave away door prizes to teachers and popcorn to the children.

Ruston Rotary Club honors October students

The Ruston Rotary Club proudly announces the recipients of the October Student of the Month Awards. Following comments by program coordinator Rachel Lilley, each student honoree spoke to the club members about their achievements at the Oct. 15 luncheon and was then presented an award of achievement. Each awardee has maintained a minimum GPA of 3.5 and been active in extra-curricular activities and leadership roles on their respective school campus.

Early voting continues today

Early voting opened at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and a there was a steady line of people outside the registrar’s office well into the day. Chief Deputy of the Lincoln Parish Registrar of Voters Sharon Parnell said so far, early voters have been coming in scores to cast their ballots for the Nov. 4 election. Early voting will continue from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Tuesday, excluding Sunday. For a complete ballot, pick up an Oct. 19 edition of the Daily Leader or visit www.rustonleader.com. For more information, contact the registrar of voters at 251-5110.

State gives Lincoln a ‘B’

Choudrant High sees highest gain as only ‘A’ rating

The Lincoln Parish School District has once again scored a “B,” according to the state’s comprehensive report card on school achievement received by the district on Monday.
“We are happy we maintained a ‘B’ level and grew a tenth of a point overall,” said Testing Coordinator Donna Doss. “But our goal is to become an ‘A’ district — it’s all outlined in our academic plan.”
This year, former Ruston High School Principal Mike Milstead took the helm in the new chief academic officer position created by the LPSD to help achieve the ‘A’ status.

Ruston native poet, professor to read works during Tech visit

Cleopatra Mathis, poet and professor of creative writing at Dartmouth College, will read and speak about her poetry at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in room 105 of George T. Madison Hall on the campus of Louisiana Tech University.
Mathis, a Ruston native, will also speak to Tech’s Sigma Tau Delta English honorary society, Poetry Society, and English majors at 4:30 p.m. and will hold a book signing session immediately following her public presentation. Mathis’ visit is sponsored by the Tech Department of English with support from the George E. Pankey Eminent Scholar Chair in English.
