Entergy aids local NCLAC arts camps

The North Central Louisiana Arts Council is pleased to announce the receipt of an Entergy grant to aid in its Summer Arts Camps.
NCLAC received the grant to assist with supply costs for its annual camps held for first through sixth graders. Thanks to Entergy, art supplies will be covered so that tuition costs can be kept at $65 per week.
NCLAC’S Camp schedule is as follows:
• Ruston 1, June 23-27 at First Baptist Church, Ruston.
• Jonesboro, July 7-11 at United Methodist Church, Jonesboro.
• Ruston 2, July 14-18 at First Baptist Church, Ruston.

(Pictured above) Krystal Guillory, teacher of blind students for Lincoln Parish Schools, was a recent guest at the Ruston Lions Club noon luncheon.  Ms. Guillory is responsible for teaching the blind students of Lincoln Parish many subjects including Braille.

Family day set for Saturday

On Saturday, The Claiborne Dutch Oven Cookers in conjunction with Lake Claiborne State Park will hold A Family Fun Memorial Day in the Park.
Activities begin at 10 a.m. with Dutch oven cooking and demonstrations at the Nature Center area with Dave Simons and the Claiborne Black Pots ‘Unplugged’ Band.
A special raffle drawing will take place from entries of anyone who cooks. Then, at noon there will be a complementary chilidog lunch, dessert and a soft drink or water.

Skeet shoot right on target

DOWNSVILLE — ATVs rolled into Wildwings Sporting Club in Downsville the morning of May 10 as sixty people turned out to participate in the first J.P. Fitzmorris Memorial Skeet Shoot.
Teams competed in a 15-station, 100-round sporting clay course.

LA Tech Sports summer camps coming up

The 2013-14 collegiate athletic year may be coming to a close, but the season of summer rapidly approaching which means it’s almost camp time on the campus of Louisiana Tech University.
Kids of all ages will meet on the Tech fields and courts here shortly to work with the Bulldog and Lady Techster coaching staffs on developing their skills and fundamentals, all while having plenty of fun in the process.

Dunkin’ ’Dogs make visit to A.E. Phillips students

The students of A.E. Phillips earned two forms of entertainment at a celebratory pep rally on Monday after exceeding their goal of money raised for the Boosterthon.
One was seeing the principal Joanne Hood kiss a pig and the other was a visit by the coaches and players from the Louisiana Tech men’s basketball team.
Head coach Michael White introduced everyone and then spoke to the kids on a number of topics such as team work, goals, friendship and bullying.
Those same topics were then linked in with basketball at the end through a mini-camp put on by the Bulldog players.

Tech goalie to play professionally in Iceland

When people think of Iceland, they may think of the phenomenon of the Northern Lights or the geological beauties of lava fields and volcanoes or the junior hockey rival of the USA in the movie “D2: The Mighty Ducks.”
But for Louisiana Tech goalkeeper Caitlin Updyke, the small Nordic island will be thought of as home as the Lady Techster who has been in net for the past four years will be playing professional soccer this summer in Akranes for the IA Akranes.

Connor Dwyer is Instafamous

Local grad finds huge following with creative photos

Each day, nearly 100,000 people on the Internet check in to see what Cedar Creek graduate Connor Dwyer has to share with them on Instagram.
Instagram is a photo blogging website, where individuals upload photos and videos to tell people about their lives.
And Dwyer, son of Sean and Linda Dwyer, has seen a great deal of success in spreading his message. Late last year he was featured on the login page for the site, bringing extra attention to his blog. And, recently he has received offers to endorse products through his site.

A family feud erupts

A Dubach man and his father-in-law are in the Lincoln Parish Detention Center today after opting to settle a disagreement the old-fashioned way: fighting it out in the yard.
Perry Alfred Pound, 52, and Daryl Lee Barnes Sr., 32, both of 833 Airline Road, face aggravated battery charges as a result of Monday night brawl.
According to the arrest affidavits, Lincoln Parish Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call reportedly involving a fight with a dangerous weapon at the Airline Road residence and arrived to find both men standing in the yard.

Tech’s Brakeville named to Board of Regents

Louisiana Tech SGA president Maggie Brakeville was elected recently by the Louisiana Council of Student Body Presidents to represent the group on the state Board of Regents.
“My goal will focus on letting the student voice be heard,” said Brakeville, a senior agriculture business major. “I want to make sure that students of all types are considered in the decisions we make this term.”
COSBP meets each year in Baton Rouge to elect its leadership and the group’s representatives to the state’s four higher education governing boards.
