When moving, bring painkillers

My lower back is really starting to hurt.
I tried an ice packet, a heating pad and even combining both to take away the pestering pain. Nothing seems to work.
I guess lifting heavy boxes, sleeping on the couch every night and walking back and forth from my SUV to the house is not helping the cause.
I pictured moving being a piece of cake because, “I don’t have that much stuff, Mom. I don’t need anyone’s help. Quit being a Mom.”
My mother kept annoying me with questions before the big move, and I was quick to give a snarky response proving my masculinity and intelligence.

4-H cooking contest recipes

On Dec. 6 Lincoln Parish 4-H Clubs held the 4-H Cooking Contest at Tractor Supply of Ruston. 4-H members from throughout Lincoln Parish had the opportunity to enter the Cooking Contest in 12 individual divisions. The divisions were as follows: Beef —Ground Beef Appetizer, Ground Beef Main Dish and Beef Other Cuts; Poultry — Chicken; Seafood — Shrimp, Fish and Crawfish; Egg — Appetizer/Salad and Dessert; Pecan — Appetizer/Salad and Dessert; and Healthy Boxed Lunch.

Anders, Mitcham re-elected as officers

Lincoln Parish School Board members cited a “bittersweet” tone to their Tuesday night meeting as they welcomed new board members, voted to retain officers from 2014, said goodbye to former Ruston Mayor Dan Hollingsworth and formally accepted the retirement of Superintendent of Schools Danny Bell.
Because of how the terms fell, all 12 board members were sworn-in by Clerk of Court Linda Cook during the regular meeting. However, only two of those members — District 1 Representative Susan Wiley and District 2 Representative David Ferguson — were new to the board.

Freezing weather ahead

The strong arctic high-pressure system that’s moving through North Louisiana today could bring the region’s first snowflakes of 2015 by Friday.
“There’s a chance for some light stuff going into the weekend,” Kip Franklin, Lincoln Parish director of homeland security and emergency preparations, said.
But little to no accumulation is expected, according to the National Weather Service.

Takewell sentenced for drugs

MONROE — Christopher Takewell, 38, of Choudrant, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for drug distribution. U.S. District Judge Robert G. James handed down the sentence on Monday. Takewell was also sentenced with five years of supervised release.
According to evidence presented at the Sept. 25, guilty plea, law enforcement agents conducted a controlled purchase of 104.65 grams of pure methamphetamine in January 2014 from Takewell at his home. The residence was searched on Jan. 24, 2014, and the $6,250 used in the controlled purchase was recovered.

$16K reward offered in Union disappearance

A $16,000 reward is being offered to anyone who can lead authorities to the exact location of Amanda McKinnie McPherson, a Union Parish native missing since Nov. 4.
McPherson’s mother, Sharon McKinnie of Linville, said community businesses contributed the money for the reward. That’s in addition to a $1,500 reward offered by Crime Stoppers of Union Parish.

RPD seeks burglars who tunneled through walls

Burglars responsible for breaking through the walls of a local shopping center on the 900 block of South Trenton Street are still at large.
Ruston Police Department Deputy Chief Clint Williams said a call was received at 4 a.m. Tuesday when an alarm was sounded at a local check cashing business.

Tech prepares for First Pitch Dinner

Diamond ’Dogs event set for Jan. 31 to preview upcoming 2015 season

Louisiana Tech Baseball will kick off the 2015 season with the inaugural First Pitch Dinner, which has been scheduled for 7 p.m. Jan. 31 at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant.
The event will be headlined by Hall of Fame coach Keith Madison, who ended his career in 2003 as the winningest coach in the history of Kentucky baseball with 737 victories in 25 years. Head coach Greg Goff will reunite with his former colleague after he served on Madison’s staff as the Wildcats’ pitching coach from 1999-2003.

Tech season tickets on sale now

Louisiana Tech Baseball fans can now purchase season tickets for the upcoming 2015 home schedule, which is set to begin on Feb. 20 against UAPB and features a total of 29 home contests in Greg Goff’s first year as head coach.
Tech is scheduled to play a total of 55 games in 2015, including 14 three-game series, eight of which will be played at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park, now in its 45th year of service. The Bulldogs will also host five midweek games over the course of the campaign, including three against in-state opponents ULM, Grambling and Northwestern State.

GRAMBLING — The Kittens climbed to 8-9 on the season as Grambling Laboratory High School took a big home win over Calvary Baptist Tuesday evening.
Tylan Dean led the way for Grambling with 15 points along wtih five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Shawntaveon Jenkins added a double-double for the Kittens with 10 points and 10 boards along with a steal and a blocked shot while Xavier Davis added nine points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists.
