Pelicans’ Davis out 1-2 weeks, Anderson 2-4 weeks

METAIRIE. (AP) — The New Orleans Pelicans say Anthony Davis is expected to be out up to two weeks because of a right shoulder sprain, while fellow forward Ryan Anderson is expected to miss up to four weeks with a right knee sprain.
Davis, an All-Star who averages 23.9 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game, left Saturday night’s victory at Miami in the first quarter after a collision under the basket with Hassan Whiteside.
Davis had only recently returned from a right shoulder sprain that caused him to miss two regular-season games and the All-Star game.

Buddy Ball registration underway

Registration for Ruston’s Buddy Ball softball league is underway for the spring season.
All special-needs youngsters ages 4-16 are eligible to sign up. Participants do not have to be Lincoln Parish residents. Games begin March 21.
Youngsters who played Buddy Ball last year will automatically receive a new registration from in the mail. New players can pick up a registration form at Ruston’s Locker Room, 1913 East Kentucky, in Ruston. Completed forms should be returned to Ruston’s Locker Room or mailed to Mechelle Brown, 700 Goodgoin Road, Ruston, La., 71270.

Techsters restore tradition

Kudos to current Louisiana Tech women’s basketball coach Tyler Summitt and former coach Leon Barmore for restoring the again proud tradition of the Lady Techsters squad.
Once on top of the women’s basketball world, the Lady Techsters have again garnered national notice in recent weeks thanks to Summitt’s work to put his team back in a national spotlight and his bloodline that makes him one of the most intriguing young coaches in any sport.

McGuire passes at 93

Methodist Minister remembered as Ruston’s pastor

Long-time United Methodist minister the Rev. Doug McGuire is being remembered today as a man who always knew the right thing to say in any situation.
“He always had a kind word to say. He was so many things to so many people,” said Lewis Love, who served on the Retired Ministers Home Board with McGuire, said.
McGuire died Saturday. He was 93. A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church.

Storm Quantam on the way

Winter weather to include heavy precipitation

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. today in anticipation of the arrival of Winter Storm Quantam.
The storm was originally predicted to hit Sunday night but slowed — following the same pattern as pattern as Winter Storm Pax in February 2014. But Lincoln Parish isn’t out of the woods yet, Kip Franklin, director of the Lincoln Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, said this morning.
“It’s still going to happen,” Franklin said.

SMART Girls program to continue at BGCNCLA

In July 2014 Boys and Girls Clubs of North Central Louisiana was one of 10 clubs selected as a host site to offer the SMART Girls Program.
The club’s first cycle, which was supported by Suddenlink, was a great success.
Now, the support of community member Pamela Stewart, senior attorney with Genesis Energy, and the continued support of Suddenlink will allow the program to continue through 2015.

Unheralded ODU forward hits last-second shot to lift Lady Monarchs to win

Longtime Lady Techsters fans couldn’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu Sunday afternoon.
And not in a good way.
On a day where Louisiana Tech University honored the 1993-94 Lady Techsters basketball team that reached the NCAA Women’s Tourmanent Championship game only to fall to North Carolina on a last-second shot, it happened again.
Unheralded Annika Holopainen came off of Old Dominion’s bench and hit the game-winning 3-pointer as time ran out, shocking 2,722 Lady Techsters fans with a 72-71 win.

Tech golfers return to links

top-20 opponent and a top-10 ranked individual as it opened up play in the three-round, two-day Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate at Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course today in Mobile, Alabama.
The 15-team field teed off with a shotgun start, playing 36 holes at the par-72, 7,160-yard course with an 8 a.m. start slated for 18 holes on Tuesday.

Theatre, library join forces

The Ruston-Lincoln communities are fortunate to have talented individuals who are willing to bring the arts to them.
From March 5-8, the Ruston Community Theatre will host “To Kill A Mockingbird” at the Dixie Center for the Arts.
However, in addition to this production, the Lincoln Parish Library will also host events to coincide with the play.
LPL Programming Coordinator Emily Arnold said when Ruston Community Theatre announced their production of “To Kill A Mockingbird,” she immediately thought it would be a great opportunity for the library to host an event based on the book.
