GSU focuses on learning to handle wins

Is there any chance Grambling State University’s football team might bask in the glory of their first win of the season and only third victory over the past years and rest on their laurels preparing for its upcoming game against Prairie View?
Forget about it.
That’s what first-year GSU coach Broderick Fobbs intends to do.

RHS freshmen defeat Neville

Ruston High School defeated Neville High School 8-2 Monday in a freshman game played at L.J. “Hoss” Garrett Stadium. The Bearcats’ Donald Johnson is pictured scoring the lone touchdown of the contest.

Tech’s Dennis earns C-USA soccer honor

Louisiana Tech forward Taylor Dennis earned Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week honors for her program record-setting four goals scored against Grambling State this past Friday.
This marked Dennis’ second ever player of the week award and the first by any Tech player in C-USA.
She was previously tied with seven other Lady Techsters for the most goals scored in a single game with three, a feat she accomplished in 2010 as a freshman.

C-USA announces six contests for Dunkin’ ’Dogs to be televised

Louisiana Tech will have at least six conference games televised for the upcoming 2014-15 men’s basketball season, announced today by Conference USA.
The television schedule makes up one-third of C-USA contests for Tech with four of the six TV games coming at home inside the Thomas Assembly Center.
The Bulldogs will host Middle Tennessee at 3 p.m. Jan. 17 in a contest that will be broadcast on FSN.
Less than two weeks later, CBS Sports Network will televise the home match against first-year C-USA member Western Kentucky on Jan. 29. Tip time will be at 6 p.m.

Lady Techsters welcome back luncheon set

Louisiana Tech head coach Tyler Summitt, the Lady Techster coaches and players and the Tip-Off Club invite everyone to the annual Lady Techster Welcome Back Luncheon set for noon Oct. 11.
During the covered-dish event which will be held at Argent Pavilion adjacent to the Thomas Assembly Center, Summitt will introduce this year’s players, coaches and support staff while previewing the upcoming season.
Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish (vegetable, salad, bread or dessert) while the entrée and drinks will be provided.

Conference of Mayors embrace healthy communities

ATLANTA — Morehouse School of Medicine’s Satcher Health Leadership Institute in partnership with the World Conference of Mayors hosted an intensive one week Community Health Leadership training Aug. 4-8, titled, “Mayors for Healthy Communities Program,” at the National Center for Primary Care on the campus of Morehouse School of Medicine.
Grambling Mayor Edward Jones was one of the mayors who participated in this event.

Lions Club hosts Sheriff Stone

The noon meeting of the Ruston Lions Club was held at LifeCare Hospital. Lincoln Parish Sheriff Mike Stone addressed the group. Stone told the group of the ongoing operations of the sheriff’s office.

LPDC plans installation of razor wire, cameras

When Jim Tuten took the position as warden for the Lincoln Parish Detention Center, there was a total of eight cameras for the entire facility and virtually no fencing that would deter an inmate from hopping right over.
Since, improvements in security measures have been made, but two men escaping from the LPDC on Sept. 13 made it clear to Tuten that immediate measures had to be taken to ensure that did not happen again.

Search yields marijuana

A small child was present during the Monday arrest of two Grambling residents.
According to the arrest affidavit, agents with the Lincoln Parish Narcotics Enforcement Team served a search warrant at 187 Mansfield Estates, Grambling, on Monday morning.
During the search of the residence ,agents reportedly located three individuals — Alexandria Alexis Patrick, 24, Sirarminus Demetrius Williams, 27, both of 187 Mansfield Estates, Grambling, and a small child.
Patrick and Williams were both advised of their rights per Miranda and handcuffed while agents finished searching the residence.

Clucks to be heard in Dubach

Chicken Fest weekend ahead

The 26th annual Louisiana Chicken Festival is set to strut through Dubach this week.
Kicking off the festivities will be a mix and mingle event from 6 to 6:45 p.m. today at the Scott Hamilton Warehouse.
Gina Stokes, a member of the Dubach Restoration and Beautification Organization, thinks this will be the best festival to date.
“I think this is going to be the best festival we’ve had yet,” she said. “We’ve had a lot more entries and people seem to be more excited about the festival.”
