Crash causes death

An early morning crash resulted in one death today.
Eric Brazzel, public eduction officer, said Ruston Fire Department EMS responded to a motor vehicle accident on Interstate 20 westbound at 7:15 a.m. today.
Louisiana State Police Public Information Officer Michael Reichardt confirmed there was a death.
Reichardt also said the death did not occur at the scene of the accident, but it is suspected that the occupant’s death came at Northern Louisiana Medical Center.
A total of five patients were transported to NLMC for serious injuries sustained during the accident.

Farmer’s Market comes to a close

The Ruston Farmers Market will hold its last market day of 2014 from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Held rain or shine each Saturday, the market is located in the public parking lot on the corner of Louisiana Avenue and South Monroe Street, in downtown Ruston, provided courtesy of the city of Ruston.
 The market will feature fresh local produce, baked goods, jams, jellies and other canned foods. Also available will be arts and crafts and items for holiday gift giving, hot cider, holiday music and a cooking demo using fresh produce from the market.

Celebrating the waters of Union Parish

Something that started with a simple question more than three years ago will bear fruit next week with the opening of the Union Museum of History and Art. “Celebrating the Waters of Union Parish,” the premier exhibit at the museum, opened Thursday at the museum, located at 116 North Main St. in Farmerville.
Jean Jones, who chairs the board that oversees the museum, said the subject of the museum’s first exhibit was one that was an easy conclusion to reach.

Fabric Shop celebrates 30 years in Ruston

For the past 30 years, the Fabric Shop owners Ron and Louise Adams have been welcoming people into their family through the front doors of their shop.
“Come join our family,” Louise Adams said. “We adopt everyone that becomes our customers.”
Adams said the couple, along with their family and friends, will be celebrating the 30th anniversary for the shop with an open house from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday at the store. Visitors to the shop on Saturday will receive a free gift, food and special deals.

Bulldogs hold off Lady Techsters

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Since official workouts began in early October, Louisiana Tech head coach Tyler Summitt has been preaching to his team to play a complete 40-minute game.
On Thursday night in Starkville, Mississippi, the Lady Techsters came close.
Kelia Shelton scored 31 points and Louisiana Tech put a scare into the 22nd ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs before falling 81-77 before 3,012 fans at Humphrey Coliseum. It would have been the Lady Techsters’ first win over a Top 25 team since an 84-71 victory against No. 24 Ole Miss in 2005-06.

Stay healthy this season

According to the Centers for Disease Control, and local observation, flu and cold season are in full swing. And, unfortunately, here in Louisiana is one of the hot spots for influenza-like illnesses.
People have already begun to miss work and school in our area, and residents need to be careful to take care of themselves now so they have the best chance of preventing catching the flu or cold viruses.

Acts of kindness displayed by police

In recent weeks, I have gotten multiple phone calls and emails about scammers.
Scammers main goal is to attempt to collect money from innocent bystanders.
It is a travesty that people fall victim to these scams and do not realize what they really are ahead of time.
The most recent scam is that of someone impersonating a local deputy.
Lincoln Parish Mike Stone said the caller then proceeds to inform the resident they missed a call for jury duty and in order for there not to be charges pressed the person must wire a certain amount of money or else they will be arrested.

Party of the year set for Feb. 7

Come dine, dance and support the arts with us this February!
It’s time to mark your calendars for the upcoming Krewe of Allegro Mardi Gras Ball and Silent Auction. Ruston’s “party of the year” will be Feb. 7, which will be here before we know it. This annual event, theme of which this year is “the Arts,” has been a highlight of the Mardi Gras season in Lincoln Parish for many years. The 2015 party will be the 16th year.

RHS Cheers to fourth straight state title

Ruston High competition cheerleaders brought home a state championship in the Large Varsity Non-Tumbling Division, making it four years in a row for the school to win a state title. The LHSAA hosted the state championship in Monroe on Dec. 6. The team will now prepare for the National Cheerleaders’ Association Senior and Junior High National Championship, which will be in Dallas.
