Each June, people jump in their cars and travel from all over the place with one thing in mind — several good licks of some sweet Ruston peach ice cream.

Diane Zumwalt, chairperson for this year’s event, said the ice cream being served at the festival is an exclusive treat.

Protect seniors from scams

Technological advancements have brought us the Internet, smart phones, cheaper long distance rates and a much more global environment, even right here in rural areas like Lincoln Parish.
Unfortunately, all of these positive changes have also increased instances of criminals taking advantage of others. This can be especially true of older individuals, who spent their youth in simpler times when people, on average, seemed more trustworthy.

Gov. Bobby Jindal recently signed a bill that will release nonviolent drug offenders from jail one year early if they agree to participate in rehabilitation.
Great.

Ruston’s Board of Aldermen has 20 days to appoint someone to fill the unexpired term of late District 2 Alderman Elmore Mayfield.
Mayfield, 70, died Monday. State law requires that vacancies of less than a year be filled by appointment, rather than special election.
Mayfield’s term expires Dec. 31. The appointee will be eligible to run in this fall’s elections if he or she wishes, Ruston City Attorney Bill Carter said Tuesday.
It’s up to Mayor Dan Hollingsworth to recommend an appointee. The mayor was unavailable for comment this morning.
