Tech moves softball tourney

in

Louisiana Tech was originally scheduled to host Southern and Detroit in a round robin softball tournament set for Saturday and Sunday, but winter weather that Ruston has experience all week has forced the tourney to be played at Southern University in Baton Rouge.
Saturday’s games include Tech vs. Southern (10 a.m.), Tech vs. Detroit (12:30 p.m.) and Southern vs. Detroit (3 p.m.).
Sunday’s schedule includes Tech vs. Detroit (10 a.m.), Tech vs. Southern (12:30 p.m.) and Detroit vs. Southern (3 p.m.).

‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ premieres Thursday

Play explores racial tension in 1935 Alabama

Ruston Community Theatre’s next production, “To Kill A Mockingbird” opens Thursday at The Dixie Center for the Arts. The two-act dramatic play is adapted by Christopher Sergel from Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel “To Kill a Mockingbird.” This production is sponsored by the Law Offices of Woodard and Clement.

Claiborne Cookers to meet on Saturday

Homer — The Claiborne Dutch Oven Cookers is holding their monthly gathering and family fun day on Saturday at Lake Claiborne State Park — Nature Center for a Sweethearts, Valentine’s and Chocolates Dutch oven cooking and Family Fun Day.
Residents are invited to cook with the group focusing on the Sweethearts and Chocolate theme. They will light the coals around 9 a.m., and sample the cooking around noon. While they cook, Dave Simons and the Claiborne Black Pots “Unplugged” Band will be entertaining everyone. Those who would like to cook can just bring their pots, food and supplies.

FFA is great for our youth

In a parish that is borderline rural, but doesn’t boast much agriculture, parents and other community members might be surprised that the Future Farmer’s of America groups at local high schools draw so many students. But, FFA has more to offer than teaching teens how to use a plow.

Eating disorders are serious matter

The dictionary defines an eating disorder as any of a range of psychological disorders characterized by abnormal or disturbed eating habits.
Most people hear eating disorder and immediately jump to anorexia — an emotional disorder characterized by an obsessive desire to lose weight by refusing to eat — or bulimia — an emotional disorder involving distortion of body image and an obsessive desire to lose weight, in which bouts of extreme overeating are followed by depression and self-induced vomiting, purging or fasting.

Winter weather causes a stir

It could have been worse. That’s the assessment area officials are making today in the wake of back-to-back winter storms that dumped rain, sleet and snow on Lincoln Parish.
“It was nothing like we could have had, had this been an ice event,” Parish Administrator Courtney Hall said.
Despite spotted power outages across the parish and city, and numerous weather-related vehicle incidents, officials said the parish fared well through Winter Storms Quantam and Remus.

Tech students are on the ‘heels’ of success

While some students dream of producing their own designer sweatshirts, Tevin Curley and Michael Perkins entered the TOP DAWG Idea Pitch competition with only 10 minutes to spare.
With hopes to go into business with their new and unique product, the team created a detach- able heel clip, which is designed to be a cushion for the back of the shoe to protect the ankle.
Curley said he and his teammate grabbed a flyer the day of deadline and turned in their idea with 10 minutes to spare, but they knew they had entered the perfect idea.

Bulldogs look to dig out win over Miners

First place in Conference USA at stake as Tech hosts UTEP

First place is on the line in Conference USA as Louisiana Tech and UTEP will battle it out inside the Thomas Assembly Center in a nationally televised game on FS1.
Justin Kutcher and Mike Jarvis will call the action in Ruston with Tech’s (21-7, 12-3 C-USA) 26-game home winning streak colliding with UTEP’s (19-7, 11-3 C-USA) seven-game winning streak.

Weather pushes Techsters game back to Friday

Instead of flying to El Paso Wednesday morning as originally scheduled, Tyler Summitt and the Louisiana Tech Lady Techster basketball team practiced at Scotty Robertson Memorial Gym for two hours.
Summitt and Co. were scheduled to fly out of Monroe mid-morning but due to the winter weather that blanketed east Texas and north Louisiana, flights were cancelled.
The travel issues forced Tech, Conference USA, UTEP and UTSA officials to work together to figure out alternate plans with the Lady Techsters now forced to attempt to get to Dallas and fly out late Thursday morning.

Prep playoffs to resume

Following days of weather delays, Simsboro and New Living Word will try to play second-round playoff road games at 6 p.m. tonight. Tori Amos (4) and the Lady Tigers will play at Stanley in Class B action while the Lady Lions will play at Singer.
