Dunkin’ ’Dogs set to start season

Tech expectations running high as team prepares for Saturday tip-off

Simply put, it was going to be no picnic for head coach Michael White and the Bulldog basketball team to match the historic 2012-13 season — a conference title, 27 wins, program records broken and a postseason appearance in the National Invitation Tournament.
No worries though. Not only did they match much of those achievements, they trumped them.

Bowden speaks at FCA event

Bobby Bowden, who has coached more football wins than any other coach in major college football, was the guest speaker Monday at the annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes fundraising luncheon, held at the Thomas Assembly Center. Tech’s Britos named CUSA Player of Month

After a stellar performance at the ITA Southern Regionals, Louisiana Tech’s Jazmin Britos was named Conference USA’s Player of the Month for October.
The sophomore knocked off opponents from SEC foes Mississippi State, Auburn and LSU en route to being the only non-SEC player to advance to the quarterfinals of the singles main draw.
Britos defeated Naomi Tran of Mississippi State in the Round of 128 in straight sets before upsetting Auburn All-American Emily Flickinger, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3. Flickinger was ranked 94th at the time for the Tigers who ranked 27th as a team.

Bearcats playoff tickets on sale

Playoff tickets to see Sontus Mitchell (31, carrying ball) and the Ruston High Bearcats’ Class 5A game against Scotlandville are currently on sale at the RHS main office during normal school hours. Tickets will cost $8 each. For more information call Virginia Rainwater at 255-0807.

Tech bowlers finish fourth at TSU tourney

Head coach Jerry Miles and the Louisiana Tech bowling squad recorded a fourth place finish this past weekend as they competed in the annual Thrashing Tiger Tournament, which was held in Houston and hosted by Texas Southern.
The Lady Techsters finished with a record of 4-7, as Texas Southern, Jackson State and Prairie View A&M took the top three spots in the second annual tournament.
Tech had a pin total of 4,373 in Baker match play, while the first place TSU Tigers recorded a pin total of 4,754 to help lead them to their first victory of the short season.

Tech’s Sloan honored

Louisiana Tech sophomore Kathryn Sloan has had a stellar year on and off the pitch and she continues to get rewarded for it.
Conference USA has announced the striker to the 2014 Women’s Soccer All-Academic First Team as the league continues to showcase its commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the field.
Sloan was one of three CUSA student-athletes to have a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

It’s a wonderful time for athletics

What an exciting time of year it is for college athletics in Lincoln Parish.
Grambling State and Louisiana Tech universities are both in the midst of football seasons that will be remembered for quite some time, as both remain thick in the hunt for conference championships and postseason play.
The G-Men are the only undefeated team left in the Southwestern Athletic Conference and on their longest win streak (7) since winning seven games in a row to capture the SWAC title in 2011.

Events scheduled across parish

On Tuesday, the village of Choudrant will present the ninth annual “Honoring All Who Served” program at 11 a.m. at the flagpole in Choudrant Park, located at the corner of Louisiana Highway 145 and U.S. Highway 80.
Patriotic performances will be presented by local talent Margaret Williams Jones, who has performed at Carnegie Hall and in numerous productions and Ricky Houck, another local artist. Also, presentations from students of Choudrant High School and special recognitions will take place.
