Mayfield’s daughter enters alderman race

The daughter of the late District 2 Ruston Alderman Elmore Mayfield is running for her father’s former job.
Angela Mayfield-Spiller announced her candidacy today saying she wants to continue her father’s 21-year legacy and commitment to public service.

RFD responds to accident

The Ruston Fire Department and Choudrant fire responded to an RV wreck at 10:30 a.m. on Monday near the Choudrant exit on Interstate 20.
RFD Public Education Officer Eric Brazzel said a 40-foot Recreational vehicle had been overturned.
Responding to the call was one rescue, one medic, two fire trucks and one command unit. The RV was occupied only by the driver and his pet dog. Both occupants only sustained minor injuries and were released at the scene.

Dixie season to host variety

In Monday’s edition of the Daily Leader, there was a misidentification of who would be performing in the upcoming Dixie Season. Jason Petty and the Swingin’ Cowboys, top, will take the state of the Dixie Center for the Arts at 7 p.m. March 13, 2015. At bottom, Albanie Fallette and Thrift Set Orchestra will take the stage on April 4.

Shell wins new 4-wheeler

Richie McKinney of McKinney Honda (left) gave a brand new Honda 4-wheeler to Chase Shell, of Winnfield. Shell won the 4-wheeler in a drawing during McKinney Honda’s 29th annual Fall Open House.

Summer grads announced

Louisiana Tech’s summer quarter commencement exercises were held Aug. 21, with diplomas awarded to 290 graduates. Commencement marked the close of the summer quarter at the university. Area graduates are as follows:

Behavorial healthcare catalyzed in Northeast La.

Northeast Delta Health Savings Account has continued the coordination of behavioral health service initially conducted by the U.S. Department of Defense Innovative Readiness Training program, a national initiative that supports the needs of underserved communities with licensed medical professionals who are military reserve service members.

Lincoln Parish FFA holds officers’ retreat at OWL Center

The Lincoln Parish Future Farmers of America officers attended a retreat at the Outdoor Wilderness Learning Center in Dubach August 11-12. Twenty-two officers from Choudrant High, Ruston High, Ruston Junior High and Simsboro High were in attendance at the overnight retreat.
The purpose of the retreat was to allow officers to gain leadership skills that they could take back to their respective schools and share with other FFA members.

Aviation museum discussed

Nell Calloway, Director of the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum, was a recent guest of the Ruston Lion Club. Calloway spoke of the museum’s namesake — Gen. Claire Chennault — as well as some of the upcoming activities at the museum.

Supporting child support

August is wrapping up and although this month represents many things — the end of summer, the beginning of school — what many people may not realize is that August is National Child Support Month.
Unfortunately, in our society child support has become a necessity to ensure single parents are compensated for the care of their children.
Child support in America was originally established for those who already had governmental assistance, but it soon became clear that the need reached further than lower-income families — it stretched across all social sectors.

High time for Bobby to back off

It’s time for Gov. Bobby Jindal to back off of 5th District Congressman Vance McAllister.
OK, so the GOP political newcomer wasn’t Jindal’s pick in last fall’s special election to fill former Rep. Rodney Alexander’s unexpired term. Barring something totally out of the blue, McAllister won’t be Jindal’s pick in this fall’s regular congressional election, either.
That’s OK. But, come on, enough is enough.
