DALLAS — Louisiana Tech head football coach Skip Holtz threw it out there — the competition for the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback role is up for grabs.
Holtz talked about the five-player competition during Conference USA Media Days earlier this week in Dallas.
“It’s wide open for the taking,” Holtz said. “We’re looking for someone to step up and take it over, and we’re hoping that happens fairly early on as we begin preseason practices.”

Protecting parish pets

Library to host animal first-aid event Thursday

For many people, Fido and Lady are as much a part of the family as anyone else. Unfortunately, while many people know basic human first aid, many are helpless in the face of a pet-related emergency.
However, that will change after Wednesday, when the Lincoln Parish Library holds “Pet First Aid and Disaster Preparedness” at 6 p.m. in the Library Events Center.
Events Coordinator Emily Arnold said the event is part of the adult summer reading program.

Teachers in Lincoln Parish have been riding the wave of the future thanks to a collaborative effort between Louisiana Tech University’s College of Engineering, College of Education and the SciTEC Discovery Centre.
A makerspace is a generally new concept, SciTEC STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Director Don Schillinger said, not only in the field of technology but also in education.
A makerspace is essentially a lab with devices that make art and objects digitally.

Fourteen students from Ruston High School’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) represented Louisiana as they attended the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, from June 26-July 3, where they competed against the best students in the United States.
Leading the way for Ruston High School FBLA was the Parliamentary Procedure Team (PLAW) who captured 10th place in the nation. This is the third time in as many tries that the PLAW team has placed nationally.
This year’s PLAW team was represented by Tahsin Bari, Landry Monroe, Ben Serio and Brandon Smith.

Cougars defense especially strong against Jonesboro-Hodge

It’s never good to not have your top two quarterbacks in a game-type setting.
But that didn’t stop Cedar Creek from turning in a strong performance Tuesday night as the Cougars played host to Jonesboro-Hodge in a 7-on-7 session at Cougars Stadium.
It was the Cougars’ defense that especially pleased head coach Ben Haddox, who watched his team pick off a number of passes and cause the Tigers to struggle on the offensive end throughout the session.

Staying on ‘TASC’ a must

Every child, at one point or another, just plain doesn’t feel like going to school. And so the excuses ensue: “... my head hurts, I don’t feel good, but you let (sibling) stay home!”
Then the begging, “Please, Mom! It’s not going to hurt anything. I’ll do the makeup work.”

Nothing new for parking problems

in
Bergeron, Nancy 2014.jpg

Business owner Louise Adams is right when she says there’s a parking problem in downtown Ruston. Consultant Ken Tipton is also right when he says there’s not a parking problem downtown.
But either way, watch for recommendations from city administrators to change how parking happens in Ruston’s core business district. And, if the board of aldermen agrees with whatever may be forthcoming, look for those changes to be in place by Nov. 1.

Former Ruston resident writes book on spiritual journey

Former Ruston resident Marilyn Sewell said if it had not been for her experience in North Louisiana and, more specifically at Louisiana Tech University, she never would have found the courage to “follow the thread” of life which lead her to becoming a renowned figure in the progressive Unitarian Universalist movement and the author of the book, “Raw Faith: Following the Thread” which delves further into her life lessons and spiritual awakenings, providing a “thread” that she hopes will lead readers closer to love, compassion and healing.
