Harsh reality of poverty exists here

There are, of course, success stories that boggle the imaginations of those of us who have lived above the poverty line. People continue to show they can come from modest or meager beginnings and progress into positive and stable lives.
We contend those kinds of stories are made possible at least partly by the services that are offered to help those with low income. Even Start family literacy programs are one example — helping parents and their children simultaneously to learn and foster an environment more conducive to that pursuit.

Blooming love may have thorns

Unfortunately, domestic violence is nothing unusual in the parish. The police respond to calls every day where residents’ arguments with their former or current significant others get out of control. Disputes have led to everything from shoving and punching to black eyes and strangulation. The phenomenon penetrates every kind of neighborhood and is not restricted to one gender. Although many people think of a man as the perpetrator in domestic violence situations, local police have said a small percentage of their complaints are in reference to women assaulting men.

Diamond ’Dogs begin Friday

The ‘Dogs will try and start winning those games this weekend when they lift off their 2009 campaign with a three-game series against Grambling State University.
Single games are set for J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park Friday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. and at Grambling Saturday at 3 p.m.
Tech has 16 lettermen, one starting pitcher and five position regulars returning from last year’s club that went 23-31 overall and posted a 7-23 mark in the Western Athletic Conference.

Gallot seeks U.S. Attorney job

“There are numerous qualified people who are interested in the U.S. Attorney position,” said Landrieu spokeswoman Stephanie Allen. “Sen. Landrieu is working closely with the administration on recommendations for all Louisiana positions and is still receiving valuable input from local leaders and elected officials.”
If appointed by the president, Gallot would represent 42 of the state’s 64 parishes including the cities of Monroe, Shreveport, Alexandria, Lafayette, Lake Charles and Ruston.
