Vegan diet sparks questions

First, I would like to make my motives clear, because I didn’t in my last column. I did not become a vegan to drop a few pounds. I did it because it is the healthiest way I know of to live. Those who practice animal-free diets incorporate primarily organic fruits and vegetables, use non-toxic/organic bath, beauty and household products and exercise regularly, which makes a significantly positive impact on the rate at which they age and to what extent they are healthy.
I’d also like to tidy up the image I’ve painted of what kinds of foods vegans regularly eat.

Federal effort will encourage local business

In light of Louisiana Tech University’s developing Enterprise Campus and burgeoning business incubators, this news is especially encouraging.
Business development experts are confident the new federal incentives will lead to increased investment, which is crucial to the success of technology start-ups.
Many have identified technology and digital media as crucial to Louisiana’s economic future because of the possibility of high-wage, high-growth jobs the fields can bring to bear in impoverished areas.

Tigers trounce Jackson State

But Grambling turned the tables this season to take its fifth win in the 10 SWAC championships that have been played since 1999.
A good portion of that solid crowd donned black and gold to cheer on their Tigers.
“We’ve been following them 30-40 years now,” Grambling resident Nelda Baisy said from her front row seat next to husband Walter, who played for the G-Men under legendary coach Eddie G. Robinson. “We’ve been here in Birmingham for every championship game Grambling has played in.

Grambling is SWAC king

GSU quarterback Greg Dillon was named the game’s offensive MVP while defensive lineman Christian Anthony took defensive honors.
Last year, GSU outscored Jackson State 19-0 in the third quarter only to see the opposing Tigers storm back with 14 points of their own in the final stanza to upend the G-Men 42-31 for the SWAC championship.
This time Grambling took the lead and never looked back.

Be cautious during the holidays

• Trust your instincts. Don’t dismiss suspicious people, cars or situations. Report them.
• Make sure doors and windows in your vehicle are closed and locked.
• Check to see no one is underneath or inside your car as you approach.
• Carry only the amount of cash or credit cards that you need, and avoid exposing cash in public.
• Keep your bag closed and carry it in front of you and close to your body. Do not leave spare keys in your purse.
• Make sure ATMs are not in secluded locations and are well-lit at night, or do not use them.

Dear Santa, these toys are the best

There is one bright spot that shines each year in the newsroom around this time: Kids’ letters to Santa.
No, that hysterical laughing emanating from our newsroom this week wasn’t the sound of the five of us simultaneously losing our marbles. It was the Santa letters.
We asked Lincoln Parish schools to send us their students’ letters to Santa so we can print them in an upcoming special section. I don’t want to give away too much of the good stuff before the section’s publication, but I just have to share my favorite letter, from Ethan at A.E. Phillips:
Hi Santa!

GSU fans fired up

Grambling enters the contest riding a red-hot nine-game win streak, but best of all, the G-Men won Bayou Classic XXXV with a 29-14 win over Southern.
That puts the G-Men, and their fans, in a much better position than last year when Southern won the Bayou Classic 22-13 before Jackson State took the SWAC title with a 42-31 win over the Black and Gold Tigers.
