Politics messing with D.C. hate crimes law

Last week, a man with a master’s degree from George Mason University, a gun and 50 rounds of ammo walked into the Family Research Council. When a building manager named Leo Johnson blocked his entry, he shot Leo in the arm.
Leo Johnson wrestled the shooter to the ground, saving untold lives. The shooter then begged for mercy from the unarmed man, saying something like, “Don’t shoot me. It was not about you. It was what this place stands for.”

Memories of old bicycles

One day last week I was at Lincoln Parish Park for a leisurely walk/jog around the lake. As I was doing my stretches on the back bumper of my truck, I noticed several young guys unloading their bicycles and preparing for a ride through and around the park.

Area artist exhibits ‘True Colors’

On Sept. 9, Louisiana artist Melanie Fitzgerald Douthit will be presenting her paintings in a show titled, “True Colors,” at Crescent City Coffee House. The North Central Louisiana Arts Council is pleased to partner with Crescent City Coffee to represent Douthit this September. The opening reception will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sept. 9, but her work will continue to hang in the coffeehouse until Nov. 26.

Bearcat Belles to hold mini-clinic

Ruston High School Bearcat Belles will hold a mini-clinic from 4-5 p.m. Sept. 10-13 at Trinity United Methodist Church gym.
Girls in grades kindergarten through six will have a chance to learn dance routines with the award- winning Belles and perform during the Ruston High School vs. Arcadia half-time show at James Field Sept. 14.

Four Saturday games will get prep teams ready for season

Football, that is.
Area fans itching for a return to prep gridiron excitement get their wish on Saturday.
The annual “Jam at the Joe” will be held at Joe Aillet Stadium on the campus of Louisiana Tech University and will provide a sneak preview to the 2012 season.

Morgan Bryan Smith, Jr.

Morgan Bryan Smith, Jr. of Portland, OR, departed this life Sunday, August 19, 2012 following an extended illness in his recovery from hip surgery. His journey to his Lord and Savior is complete. Graveside service will be 10:00 AM Saturday, August 25, 2012, at the Hamilton Cemetery in Dubach, LA, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.

Funeral services for Elizabeth Agnes Deitz Seacrist will be 2 PM Sunday, August 26, 2012 at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in West Virgina. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Mrs. Seacrist passed away Thursday, August 23, 2012 in Arcadia, LA after a long illness.

She was born January 22, 1935 in Mt. Lookout, West Virgina. Elizabeth was the daughter of the late George Wesley Deitz and Jessie McClung Deitz.
