Learning to take stock of market indexes

Stock indexes measure price fluctuations among stocks. By following the appropriate stock market index, you can compare the performance of your stocks to similar types of stocks within a particular index.
• The Dow Jones Industrial Average — The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA)* is the figure most often referred to on the news when the market’s daily activity is recapped.
The DJIA is a price-weighted index of 30 major companies, such as McDonald’s, Walmart and General Electric. As a result, high-priced stocks have much more of an influence on the index than low-priced stocks.

Diversifying your investment strategy risks

All investments carry risk. But, as an investor, one of the biggest risks you face is that of not achieving your long-term goals, such as enjoying a comfortable retirement and remaining financially independent throughout your life.
To help reach your objectives, you need to own a variety of investment vehicles — and each carries its own type of risk. 

If you spread your investment dollars among vehicles that carry different types of risk, you may increase your chances of owning some investments that do well, even if, at the same time, you own others that aren’t. As a result, you may be able to reduce the overall level of volatility in your portfolio. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against all losses.)

Chamber holds ribbon cutting for Tri Running

The Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce held ribbon-cutting ceremonies Aug. 3 for Tri Running, located at 109 E. Mississippi Ave. in Downtown Ruston. Tri Running is a new member of the Chamber and Ruston’s only exclusive running store.

Cathey re-elected trustee of national career association

Ron Cathey, Louisiana Tech’s director of counseling and career services, has been re-elected to a second term as the Southern Regional Trustee of the National Career Development Association.
As Southern Regional Trustee, Cathey will be responsible for the southern region’s state divisions and will oversee their expansion, chartering and reporting back to the association’s national board.

Tech professor co-authors paper in publication

A Louisiana Tech University business professor has co-authored an article that has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology.
Rebecca J. Bennett, the Herbert McElveen Professor of Management in the department of management and information systems at Louisiana Tech, is co-author of the article titled “An Empirical Test of Forgiveness Motives’ Effects on Employees’ Health and Well-Being.”
This two-part study revealed five motives for forgiveness of workplace offenses — apology, moral, religious, relationship and lack of alternatives — and then examined the association of these motives with health and stress.

Christy White joins French Creative as traffic manager

Christy White has joined French Creative Group, Monroe, as traffic manager. She will be responsible for the coordination of all workflow in the advertising and marketing agency.
White has worked in the financial services industry for 10 years and attended the University of Louisiana at Monroe, majoring in business administration. She has also served as a board member for seven years for the Miss Louisiana Scholarship Organization.

Warning: Watch for poisonous snakes

Poisonous snakes can show up and zap you with no warning and sometimes with dire consequences.
Item: Lavon Chandler reached for a stick of firewood recently and was bitten on the finger by a big copperhead. Chandler spent several days in intensive care.
Item: Dr. James Dickson, head of Louisiana Tech’s wildlife programs, was checking a trap for endangered pine snakes. As he reached into the trap, a copperhead nailed him on a finger. Fortunately, having a cell phone handy and alerting medical authorities quickly resulted in a swollen sore finger for a few days with no lasting effects.
