Top finishers in ‘Home Run Derby’

Capturing the top honors in the recent 2012 “Home Run Derby” hosted by the Ruston Parks and Recreation Department at the J.C. Love Athletic Complex were champion James Levingston (right) and runner-up Matt Madden. Levingston totaled nine home runs and Madden five homers.

Lightening strikes, thunder rolls

Thunderstorms of recent days have had me thinking of the Garth Brooks song, “The Thunder Rolls” depicting an unfaithful guy returning home before dawn with lipstick on his collar emitting the essence of strange perfume. The song is set to the rumble of thunder, adding an ominous quality to the scenario. You’d hope when his wife got through with him, he’d look like a bolt of lightening illuminated his britches.
A group of guys were playing soccer in the Houston area a few days ago when a thunderstorm struck. Unwisely seeking shelter beneath the overhanging branches of a big oak, two died when a lightening bolt smashed the oak to smithereens. You don’t have to be out on late-night shenanigans to feel the effect of lightening; it can happen anytime there is a thunderstorm going on.

Cox network begins coverage of state Hall event

NATCHITOCHES – Cox Sports Television, in association with Louisiana Sports Writers Association productions, has begin its coverage of the 2012 Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremonies . The first telecast was held earlier this week and featured highlights from the induction ceremony held last month at the Natchitoches Events Center.
Tonight, at 10:30 p.m., the show will be replayed on Cox affiliates throughout the network system.

State wildlife group hosts ‘Women in the Wild’ program

GRAND ISLE — Participants in the annual Louisiana Women in the Wild Program were recently able to test their fishing skills during two June weekend trips to Grand Isle presented by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and Cabela’s.
Thirty ladies, chosen by lottery drawing, experienced a variety of saltwater fishing activities under the direction of LDWF’s Education Section and Fisheries Extension Office. Each participant had previously attended the Fishing Basics Workshop at Cabela’s Gonzales location on April 21.
