Having a mental illness, even a mild one, can make maneuvering through life a little more difficult than it is for most people. On top of the everyday things — such as paying rent, grocery shopping and going to work — that everyone must face, individuals with mental illnesses or disorders must work to overcome that extra obstacle.

Long dry spell leaves dead trees

This year I am receiving more phone calls about dead trees than I have ever received. It’s very difficult to talk with a homeowner about that tree they planted when they moved into the house and tell them that there isn’t much you can do but cut it down before it becomes a safety concern. In most of the cases, the trees have died or are dying because of damage caused by the drought conditions we have had over the last five years, not from this year’s dry conditions.

School time changes have advantages

I put in many late nights of studying after band practice, church and other extracurricular activities. There was so much to do that many nights I barely had time to eat dinner before holing myself up in my room to read textbooks, write papers or study for the next exam.
I went to school at 8:30 a.m. and finished class at about 3:30 p.m. Most days I had some sort of extracurricular or church activity to fill at least a couple more hours of my day.

Q: My 21-month-old has started hitting. Whenever he hits his 4-year-old sister, I put him in his crib until he calms down. Recently, however, his sister has started hitting back. I don’t want her thinking that I go easier on him when it comes to discipline. How do I implement fair and effective punishment for the same offense for children of different ages?

James Robert Boyd

Funeral service for James Robert Boyd, age 62, of Dubach will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at Fellowship Baptist Church in Dubach. Officiating the service will be Rev. Connie Smith. Interment will follow at Fellowship Cemetery in Dubach under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.

Mr. Boyd was born June 5, 1950 and passed away July 16, 2012.
