Those tremors disseminating out of NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis, Ind., early Monday morning made their way into North Louisiana by day’s end.

Penn State ruling heard around world
Aswell, Taylor.jpg

While the Jerry Sandusky and Penn State trial has taken over the airwaves over the past few days, I have to say that it has been hard to stay focused on sports news that is actually going on.
Sure there were dozens of baseball games over the weekend, the British Open was played and I’m guessing the WNBA also played a couple games, but when I woke up Monday morning the only thing anyone was talking about was Penn State.

Panel to discuss famous feud

One of the great episodic historic events in Arkansas happened in downtown El Dorado, Ark., in 1902. The Tucker-Parnell Feud happened quickly on the Union Court House Square at about 4:30 p.m. on the afternoon of Oct. 9, 1902, which left three people dead and created a long-running feud which claimed many lives in its aftermath. There were complicated implications from the grand jury and some of the participants were banished outside the state. For many years following, a reaffirmed silence covered up the story.

Techsters stay in spotlight

Maybe they didn’t win another recent national title or have a representative in an upcoming Hall of Fame induction ceremony, but there’s no getting around Louisiana Tech University’s continued legacy in women’s basketball.
That was evident from a couple of developments in the sports world during the past week.
First, there was the announcement out of Knoxville, Tenn., that Gary Blair was chosen as one of the new members of the 2013 induction class for the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.

Test soil to produce great crops

in
Brew, Rafash.jpg

Now is an excellent time to find out exactly what your soil needs, prior to planting those spring vegetables gardens or fertilizing your home lawn.
The only way you can know exactly which soil nutrients are needed is to have your soil tests. The results of this soil test will help you to purchase only what is needed regarding fertilizer and lime.
Many times people purchase unnecessary fertilizers, and this only compounds the problem.

ELIZABETH, DEGRIE.jpg

When I first started working at the Daily Leader full time, it was my job to cover police and fire response services. This time period also coincided with an influx of new paid and volunteer firefighters for the Lincoln Parish Fire District No. 1. On more than one occasion, I was asked to go out and watch these individuals — who were learning how to protect those of us who live within the parish — go through various training.

1950s: The good old days for kids

in
Rosemond, John.jpg

Jim Fusilli, rock and pop reviewer for The Wall Street Journal, recently opined that Rolling Stone magazine’s Top 500 Songs of All Time reflected “boomer bias,” pointing out that a disproportionate number of selections were from the 1960s and 1970s. That got me thinking of the many times I’ve been accused of idealizing 1950s child rearing. I do, in fact, often compare the manner in which children were raised in those halcyon days with today’s “parenting,” daring to say that the 1950s was a much better time for kids.
