Christian Community Action will be temporarily housed in the Presbyterian Church Of Ruston, located at 212 N. Bonner St., due to scheduled renovations at their current location of 108 S. Bonner St.
Stephanie Griffin, executive director of Christian Community Action, said the renovations of the kitchen and clothing rooms were long overdue.
“We are upgrading to better serve our clients,” Griffin said. “We need more room to store food and clothing. The facility has not been upgraded in 20 years.”

The heart of Ruston healthy

It’s been said that the downtown core of a city is its heart, and Ruston is working to ensure that its vital organ is healthy and draws a rhythm of pedestrians.
Several community leaders and local residents recently gathered for a meeting at the Ruston Civic Center to discuss the potential future of the city’s core area.

Resident: Politicians in a ‘con game’

in

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them. Have you wondered if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits? Then, why do we have deficits? If politicians are against inflation and high taxes, why do we have inflation and high taxes? You and I don’t have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations; the House of Representatives does. Our Congressman Rodney Alexander is a member of the Appropriations Committee and the Subcommittee on Financial Services.
You and I don’t write the tax code. Congress does.

Having ‘a hand’ in the future

in
Cox-Boniol, Cathi.jpg

My husband loves to hold my hand. And much to my surprise and delight, I love that too. Despite the fact that they are so different, our hands seem to have been designed one for the other.
But as much as he likes to hold my hands, he likes to study them as well. He marvels at how small my hands seem in his; and, because he thinks my hands are beautiful, he loves to put something sparkly on them. For him there is security in our intertwined hands, a tangible connection to our hearts where our relationship is constantly evolving. And I love that about him.

A brush with history

in
Bleich, Joe C.jpg

Two assassinations; one in Washington, D.C. and the other in Dallas, Texas. Little did I know that when first hearing of the assassinations of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy that I would somehow indirectly bump into different aspects of these cases. I was a youngster when the shots rang out in Dallas and the Lincoln story is pure history, so far removed — at least that’s what I used to think.
On the Supreme Court, I quickly learned that as a collective group we would deal with many varied issues. The cases ranged from direct appeals in death penalty cases; direct appeals from the trial courts dealing with the constitutionality of laws; discretionary review of decisions from the five courts of appeal, as well as emergency considerations regarding issues taking place in the trial courts. However, I never thought the case that had intrigued the nation would in small part be presented for consideration — the case with conspiracy theories, intrigue and debate: the Kennedy assassination.

Why do you do what you do with money?

in
Moore, Byron.jpg

Question: I have a friend who has asked me to help him with his finances. He makes plenty of money, but he’s always blowing it on expensive junk he says he wants, but usually never uses. I think he’s trying to impress his wife’s family, but I don’t know for sure. How can I help him?
Answer: You can’t. But you can help him help himself — but only if he wants it.
Why do we do what we do with money?
It is, as they say, complicated.

Understanding the language of investing

in
Conville, Bobby.jpg

Stocks and bonds could probably be considered the basic building blocks of an investment portfolio, and you’ve most likely heard of them before.
But beyond just these two basic terms there is a whole world of investment opportunities, and sometimes the financial world seems to have a language of its own.
Fortunately though, there are many resources available to help you understand what it all means.  To get you started, let’s discuss a few of the most common terms you might hear and what they mean to you.

Automatic investing can pay off for you

in
Fallin, Randy.jpg

To achieve investment success, you don’t have to start out with a huge sum or “get lucky” by picking “hot” stocks.
In fact, very few people actually travel those two routes. But in working toward your investment goals, you need to be persistent — and one of the best ways to demonstrate that persistence is to invest automatically.
