CIC receives $2.35 million grant for education model

The Cyber Innovation Center (CIC) in Bossier City received a $2.35 million grant from the Department of Homeland Security on April 17. This grant will enable the CIC to demonstrate the portability of Cyber Discovery. This demonstration is the first step in a national roll-out.
“Our goal is to reach more than 2 million students and 15,000 teachers over the next 10 years. We’ll partner with over 60 universities and more than 800 high schools nationwide” says G.B. Cazes, vice president of the Cyber Innovation Center.

Learning about tax-free municipal bonds

Question: I do not want the risk of the stock market and I certainly don’t need to pay any more taxes. It seems to me that tax-free municipal bonds are a good choice for me. Is my thinking sound?
 
Answer: If you are very wealthy, tax-free municipal bonds may be a good choice for you.
If you’re trying to become very wealthy, tax-free municipal bonds are not going to help you get there.
Let’s make sure we understand what a municipal bond is and why it is tax-free.

La. Tech TOP DAWG winners announced

A total of $14,500 in cash and prizes was awarded drecently TOP DAWG New Venture Championship held at Louisiana Tech University.
Teams of student entrepreneurs competed in the TOP DAWG’s Idea Pitch competition this past October with the top 12 teams earning an invitation to compete in the TOP DAWG New Venture Championship.  Awards were given to the top three overall finishers as well as for entrepreneurial spirit and best presentation.

Brennan Dodge appreciation fish fry held

Special guest was Will Hayden, owner of Red Jacket Firearms, which is seen on the Discovery Channel hit show “Son’s Of Gun’s.” Pictured above: Hayden helps a fan shoot at the fish fry. Tech professor earns NSF career development grant

Niel Crews, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Louisiana Tech University and a member of Tech’s Institute for Micromanufacturing, has been awarded an Early Career Development grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for his proposal, “Thermal Gradient Microflow Calorimetry using Anisotropic Temperature Sensors.”
The five-year $400,000 award will help Crews expand the scope of his research program and also integrate his research with a series of educational and outreach activities that will involve students from the high-school to doctoral levels.

Creek golfers: Champs again

Cougars win fourth straight Class 1A state title

Cedar Creek High has won another state championship in golf.
Anything else new around Cougar country?
For the fourth consecutive year, the Cougars have been the top team in the Class 1A ranks of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association.
Cedar Creek recently made it four in a row with a comfortable 73-stroke margin over Ascension Episcopal High.
The Cougars had a scorecard reading 290-288-578. Coming in with a 321-330-651 was APH.
Not only did Cedar Creek rule the team division, but ditto in the individual department and for a fourth straight year, no less.

Van De Velde: ‘Point guard’ in C-USA move

Bruce Van De Velde knew right away what he was going to do this weekend following Friday afternoon’s press conference dealing with Louisiana Tech University’s official acceptance of membership into Conference USA.
“I’m sure I’ll be breathing a sigh of relief, then turning my phone off,” laughed the Tech Athletics Director.
Well, he has certainly earned those privileges.
For months on end that probably seemed like years at times, Van De Velde has been one of the key individuals helping Tech make the move into a much more regionally-based conference with a high national profile.

Brasuell, Bearcats face Jesuit

Cannon Brasuell will be swinging away for Ruston High School Monday when the Bearcats (25-9) travel to New Orleans to face Jesuit High (26-7) in a Class 5A Louisiana High School Athletic Association regional round playoff game. Brasuell ended the regular season with a .333 batting average, 28 runs batted in and .505 slugging percentage. More than half of his 35 regular season hits were for extra bases (all doubles). He had a home run in a 4-3 first round postseason win over West Monroe. The 6 p.m.
