in

GRAMBLING — Sophomore jinx, what sophomore jinx?
There was no such thing for Thomas Brown III at Grambling State University this spring.
The Tigers’ third baseman not only finished with the top regular season batting average in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, but was also announced Friday as the Hitter of the Year in the league.
Brown, a native of Warner Robbins, Ga., had a league-leading mark of .407 with 66 hits in 167 at bats.
The only player in the SWAC to hit over .400 had 15 doubles and seven triples and drove in 32 runs.

Shelton wins Rivers crown

in

CHOUDRANT -- Consider it a score settled for Monroe native Robert Shelton.
Shooting even-par 72 and catching Indiana ace Ron Carter on the 18th hole, Shelton then rammed home a 15-foot birdie on the second playoff hole to grab victory in the 19th annual Jim Rivers Senior Invitational Friday at Squire Creek.
Shelton’s victory, his second at the Rivers classic (previously winning in 2007), makes amends, somewhat, for the 2009 duel between these two when Carter prevailed by a shot for the crown, despite a brilliant final round 5-under-par 67 by Shelton, the best score in this event since it moved to Squire Creek in 2008.

Getting net under a big bass

in
14-1.jpg

A couple of decades ago, I had the opportunity to join my outdoor writer buddy, Keith Sutton for a bass fishing foray south of the border on Mexico’s Lake Guerrero.
I had cast a plastic worm next to a bush when I felt the tell-tale “tap..tap” on the line. Setting the hook, it because obvious I had tied into something big. Around the bush the fish went and to my dismay, the line went slack; the fish had broken off.
