Driving with phone disconnected

I caught myself doing it the other day.
While sitting at a traffic light, I pulled out my cell phone and almost keyed in a work-related text message. Then I remembered it was illegal to text while driving, and I put the phone down.
Wouldn’t it be nice if people always acted in the best interest of their own safety and those around them without the weight of the law to influence them?

Adult reading program to begin this month

The fifth annual Lincoln Parish Library summer reading program for adults begins May 30. The theme, “Between the Covers” is a play on words not only encouraging patrons to read books from cover-to-cover, but also to read books in bed.
Adults can have a summer filled with entertainment by participating in the program and playing the “Squash-Darn Book Bugs Game.”

Area Zetas raised more than $5,000 for March of Dimes

Members of Epsilon Lambda, Louisiana Tech University; Psi Beta, Grambling State University; and Epsilon Alpha Zeta Chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. raised $5,087.50 for March of Dimes. The funds were raised from bake sales, garage sales, online and obtaining donations from the community.

It’s down to a final regular season series for Louisiana Tech University’s baseball team.
Yes, it’s that simple in so far as to where the Ruston-based Bulldogs might be playing later this month.
If they can take care of business in a three-game series at Fresno State University starting Friday, then it will be on to the Western Athletic Conference’s annual postseason tournament starting May 23.

Passing for Bearcats

Quarterback C.J. Gatlin will be throwing for the Ruston High School offense in a 2 p.m. intrasquad scrimmage Saturday that will wrap up spring workouts for the Bearcats. Gatlin, a 6-3 and 215-pounder who played at Alexandria Senior High previously, will be helping RHS put the finishing touches to its spring rituals. Prior to the Bearcats’ game, Monroe Richwood and West Ouachita will be involved in a 12:30 p.m. scrimmage on the RHS turf.

Former champs in running for Rivers tournament title; Choudrant’s Hall shoots 75

CHOUDRANT — A pair of former champions, Corky Nelson of Dallas, Tex., and Ron Carter of Monticello, Ind., are among four golfers tied for the lead after round one of the 19th annual Jim Rivers Senior Invitational.
Actually, it might be more accurate to admit that picturesque Squire Creek held the upper hand Wednesday, as nobody managed to shoot par.
Nelson, Carter, Randy King of Kilgore, Tex., and John Armstrong of Frostburg, Md., all posted one-over-par 73 to share the lead heading into today’s second round which started at 8 a.m.

Funeral services for Mrs. Judy Crawford, 66, of Dubach, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 18, 2012, at First Baptist Church Dubach. Rev. Terry Ganey, Dr. Connie Ward, Rev. Barry Joyner, and Rev. Todd Free will be officiating. Interment will follow at Colvin Memorial Cemetery in Unionville under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston.
