Take time to thank your mom today

None of us would be here without our mothers, and today is the day we set aside each year to honor her.
Whether we are lucky enough to still have her in our lives, or have had to say goodbye, this is a great day to reflect on all that mom has had to give up to make our lives better.
Just by choosing to have a child, mothers sacrifice a great deal. For nine months, their bodies are essentially taken away from them as they play host to the miracle of life. Then, when babies are born, mothers give up sleep, personal time and often careers to care for their children.

Man urges nation to withdraw aid

From 1950 to 1953, I served three years in the U.S. Navy before I was 21. Two of those years I was aboard a ship. The ship sailed to several foreign ports conducting training en route.
The people in each country seemed to be pleased that we were there. During the ensuing years, the feeling of those people changed drastically. It became apparent because the leaders of most foreign countries voted against the U.S. on issues within the United Nations.

A brief history of Mother's Day

By the time some of you have picked up the paper today you have already started the celebration. Perhaps there was the breakfast in bed or coffee brought for a happy awakening.  Maybe the husband or children cooked, in some form or fashion, breakfast in the kitchen, maybe even something more than a bowl of cereal.  Some of you went to church to hear either a special sermon or recognition of this marvelous day.  Then if not overloaded with the breakfast feast, off to lunch you go, hoping to beat the crowd if going to a restaurant or having something special at home.

Maintain a diversified portfolio in tough times

While it is always important to maintain a diversified portfolio, it is especially vital to remain diversified during volatile market conditions. As an investor, you should be careful not to get caught up in any panic selling and should maintain your focus on long-term goals.
This point is especially key if you have already built a well-diversified portfolio. If you are concerned about any particular securities, it may be better to discuss these with your financial advisor before cashing out.

Can you turn ‘Be a Millionaire Day’ into reality?

If you look hard enough, you can find many obscure holidays, but few of them can instantly capture people’s interest as much as “Be a Millionaire Day,” which is “celebrated” on May 20. While amassing a million dollars may not be as significant a milestone as it used to be, most of us would still feel pleased if we could someday attain “millionaire” status.

Louisiana Tech designated a U.S. center of excellence

The National Security Agency (NSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has designated Louisiana Tech University as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Research from the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security for academic years 2012 through 2017.

Entergy warns residents of new electric bill scams

Entergy’s Customer Service Centers are receiving numerous inquiries from customers concerning a scam that claims the president of the United States is allowing credits or applying payments to customers’ utility bills.
The scams have occurred in Louisiana, but customer accounts in Texas have been affected. The company has taken action to protect those customers, interrupt the scammers’ processes and limit the spread to others.

Daily Leader takes home 25 LPA awards

The Ruston Daily Leader took home several accolades in newswriting, design and advertising categories at the 132nd Annual Louisiana Press Association Convention on May 5 in Marksville.
The editorial contests range from news story writing to graphic design while the advertising entries were judged based on design, creativity and effectiveness.

Ribbon cutting held for Heritage Realty Group

Ribbon-cutting ceremonies and a launching party were held May 2 for Heritage Realty Group, located at 1319 North Vienna St. in Ruston. The event was sponsored by the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce.

Newton: Title perfect in golf

Brandon Newton of Cedar Creek High School has competed in four Class 1A Division V Louisiana High School Athletic Association state golf tournaments and finished as the individual champion each time. The perfect performance was capped by his 67-72-139 scorecard at the recent 2012 championship meet. Newton earned All-State honors and an invitation to the LHSAA-hosted “Tournament of Champions” that he won in 2011. He helped the Cougars capture their fourth straight state title.
