Legislators sound off on education bills

On Wednesday afternoon, Gov. Bobby Jindal signed into law his historic package of education bills that marked sweeping reform to the state’s public education.
Locally, many teachers, residents and community members were on edge while the bills were debated in the House and Senate. The representatives and senators that represent Lincoln Parish in the state Legislature had mixed feelings about the bills and shared some of those thoughts with the Ruston Daily Leader.

Open house event good for parish

From 1-4 p.m. today, Lincoln Parish residents and people considering moving to the area will have a once-a-year opportunity to peruse the majority of the properties available for sale within the parish.
Dicky Nealy, owner/operator of ERA Lincoln Realty, said this annual parishwide open house, which was first presented in 2002, provides a unique chance for residents to see all that the local housing market has to offer. Most realtors in the parish will open their properties, and local banks will provide information about the financial side of the business.

Resident concerned about tax usage

The money belongs to us. Our tax dollars. Taxpayers give the money to Congress to dispense according to the U.S. Constitution. We trust them to spend it wisely; but woefully, much of it is misspent in redundancy and duplicate programs. They (all of them) need to be better stewards of our money. Many of us have worked hard and sacrificed to provide for our families. I don’t appreciate my tax dollars being wasted.

Song brings renewed hope

This column has been in the can for more than two weeks now. In fact, I wrote the bulk of it from a hotel room in Tulsa, Okla., where I was conducting a workshop for their teachers. Yet it’s important that we put it in context.
I have been accused of being perpetually optimistic. It’s no secret to those that know me that I’m definitely a “glass half full” kind of person. I guess that’s another thing I inherited from my daddy.
