Ex-LSU star Wilkerson joins G-Men

GRAMBLING — Just in time for spring training, Grambling State University’s football program has added a former national award-winning offensive lineman to coach that position.
Ben Wilkerson, who won the Rimington Award as the nation’s top collegiate center while at LSU, has been hired by Head Coach Doug Williams as the defending Southwestern Athletic Conference champions’ new offensive line coach.
The 6-4 and 305-pound Wilkerson is one of the all-time most productive offensive interior performers in LSU history, having been chosen as a consensus All-American as well as earning that Rimington Award during his senior season of 2004.

Tech wins over Grambling, 4-1

Make it 16 in a row for Louisiana Tech University against Lincoln Parish neighbor Grambling State University and put Caleb Dudley in the Bulldogs’ record book.
That’s the result of a 4-1 win by the ‘Dogs (15-14) over the Tigers (14-12) at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park Wednesday night.
Dudley registered all-time save No. 19 to move past previous co-record holder Buddy Aulds and also earned save No. 5 on the season.

Sims family at Dean camp

The annual “Pro Day Camp” hosted last weekend by Pro Football Hall of Fame member Fred Dean and the Boys and Girls Clubs of North Central Louisiana attracted an estimated 250 youngsters from throughout the area. Bearcats meet Rebs

in

Ruston High School will begin an important District 2-5A baseball series against West Monroe today.
The Bearcats and Rebels will hook up in varsity and junior varsity action at the Rebels’ diamond today before moving on to the Ruston High complex located on Ball Road on Friday and then back to West Monroe on Saturday.
Today’s action will start with a junior varsity contest at 4 p.m. and be followed by a varsity duel at 6 p.m.

RGSA deadline is Friday

in

Froday is the deadline for girls between the ages of 13-to-18 to sign up for the 2012 Ruston Girls Softball Association season.
The cost for being on a team in the upcoming season is $65 per player. The season will begin April 30 and end June 1 at the RGSA Complex located on Farmerville Street.
Registration forms can be downloaded on www.rustonsoftball.com or by calling Cheryl Lamkin at 235-5477.

Martille Cook passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 04, 2012, leaving a legacy of commitment to God, family and friends. Services for Mrs. Cook include a visitation Friday, April 6 from 5:00- 7:00 pm at Owens Funeral Home in Ruston. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Cook Baptist Church at 10:00 am with Rev. Mike Holloway officiating. Burial will immediately follow in Cook Cemetery.

Nominations sought for Betty Robbins Award

To honor what the Junior Auxiliary does in the community Mayor Dan Hollingsworth declared this week JA Week in Ruston.
The Junior Auxiliary has served the Ruston community for 31 years, and currently there are 55 women serving the needs of children in the community.
To date the organization has served 2,350 children with their service projects, according to Public Relations Officer Jeannie Tinker.

Siegmund named as Merit winner

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of approximately 800 outstanding Black American high school seniors who have won Achievement Scholarship® awards through the National Achievement Scholarship Program.
Benjamin E. Siegmund, a senior at Cedar Creek School, was awarded the National Achievement Scholarship in the amount of $2,500.
Siegmund said his probable career field is accounting.

Tech hosts GSU in baseball action

in

Louisiana Tech University will begin its Western Athletic Conference baseball schedule this weekend, but first there’s a meeting with its Lincoln Parish neighbor.
The Bulldogs (14-14), who play host to Sacramento State University in a league-opening series starting on Friday, have a 6 p.m. duel against Grambling State University (14-11) at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park tonight.
It will mark the second game between the two schools this season, with the ‘Dogs gaining a recent 10-9 victory at Wilbert Ellis Park in Grambling.
