Books should have their place

E-readers are spineless. Literally.
This may be the biggest distinction between the e-reader and a physical book that concerns me about the future of reading.
E-readers, whose primary goal is to serve up as many books as we want (to pay for) all in one place.
No more having to worry about bookshelves, nor the problem with storing books.
No more coffee-stained pages, dog-eared pages, notes from other people in used books, borrowing books, sharing books, reading a picture book to a child and (what scares me most of all) — no more libraries.

Ruston scores with LHSAA

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s State Farm Insurance “Top 28” packed up and left Ruston on Saturday night, but not before leaving the city with an economic boost many towns of Ruston size don’t see often.
The three-day basketball tournament hosted at Louisiana Tech University’s Thomas Assembly Center featured schools from all over the state and brought in an estimated 27,500 people into the area, according to Ruston-Lincoln Convention and Visitor’s Bureau President Kyle Edmiston.

Pro sports, social media have obstacles

Sports and social media have not been the best of friends. The two have butted head since the marriage of instant publicity and connectivity.
First, the instant publicity factor of things like Twitter and Facebook give those who are famous or infamous is ridiculous. The speed in which a person can spread their image or ideas is quick and very effective.

Tigers to kick off 2012 season in Shreveport

GRAMBLING — For the second straight year, a Lincoln Parish team will meet up with TCU on the football field.
Last December, it was Louisiana Tech University facing the Horned Frogs in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.
Now, for the 2012 season, it will be Grambling State University taking on the Top 25 ranked team.
In unveiling its schedule for the upcoming season on Tuesday, the Tigers will play TCU on Sept. 8 as one of their 11 games.
A starting time for that contest which will serve as the Horned Frogs’ home opener will be announced later.

Tech golfers No. 2 at Argent meet

Three Bulldogs finish in Top 10 at Squire Creek course

Three Louisiana Tech University golfers finished in the Top 10 to lead the Bulldogs to a second-place finish at the 2012 Argent Financial Classic that wrapped up play at the Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant on Tuesday.
Cody Blankenship, Sam Forgan and Cody Santone of Tech all finished the three-round event in red numbers, as the Bulldogs fought off a late rally from No. 46 ranked Middle Tennessee during the final round. Only No. 20 ranked LSU defeated the Bulldogs, who entered the event ranked No. 75 in the country.

Cedar Creek offense balanced in 14-4 win

Cedar Creek High’s baseball team improved to a 9-3 record with a 14-4 romp past Oak Grove in the recent Choudrant High School tournament.
Stsephen Kunz was the winning pitcher for the Cougars with five and two-thirds innings of duty that resulted in a two-hitter and six strikeouts.
The Cougars, off to another good start, had 10 different players contribute to the offensive assault.

GSU Falls

SHREVEOIRT — Grambling State University (10-6) lost to Centenary College 11-8 in baseball action here Tuesday night.
The Tigers’ 13-hit offense was led by Darren Farmer (four-for-four, RBI), Elias Todman (two-for-five, RBI), Jose Longoria (one-for-five, three RBIs) and Kris Minter (two-for-four), while A.L. Manrrique got the loss.
