Parish teams seek TAC berth

in
New Living Word, Dubach, Simsboro boys in semis

Lincoln Parish’s chances of having a participant in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association boys’ basketball finals next week are Las Vegas friendly.
The odds greatly favor the parish, which will have three teams involved in semifinal contests of two different classifications at two different sites this weekend.
And in one of those, for Class C, it’s guaranteed that a team from the parish won’t have to be travelling very far next week to play in the tournament.

Dubach girls stopped by Saline

in

MONROE — Theodis Johnson put the full blame for Dubach High’s loss in the girls’ state basketball Class C semifinals Thursday night squarely on his broad shoulders.
Never mind that the young Lady Hornets (31-6) started off uncharacteristically slow, shot a mere 10 percent (3-of-30) from the field in the first half and might have even experienced some of the “big court” jitters that accompany reaching this deep into the postseason.
“We should have come out with more intensity and that’s my fault,” Johnson said after the District 1-C champions were edged by Saline 51-48 “We came out complacent and that’s my fault. Put the blame on me. I’m the coach.”

Gas prices add fuel to the fire

in
Aswell, Taylor.jpg

I have only been driving for seven and a half years, but during that time I have seen price at the pump do crazy things in my short experience driving.
During that time I have had two vehicles, both cars, both capable of saving me some gas money compared to less gas-friendly options that are out there. And even though I am not paying $80 every time I fill up my car, I am still being hurt by the constant rising prices of gas.
On Monday, the price of gas rose for the 20th straight day, pushing the national average around $3.70 a gallon, and the quest toward $4 a gallon seems to be getting closer and closer to reality.

Work to help end La. poverty

in
Ahmed, Saraf.jpg

The onset of the Great Recession has thrown millions of Americans into dire financial stress, with nearly one in eight living permanently in poverty. Sadly, Louisiana remains one of the poorest states in the nation; the 2010 Census Poverty determined that the majority of Louisiana parishes were 16.9 percent or more in poverty. This was mostly in rural northern parishes, and only 11 out of 64 parishes were free from severe poverty. Louisiana’s overall poverty rate is 19.6 percent, compared to the national average of 12.4 percent. The poverty rate in metro or urban Louisiana is 18.1 percent, compared to rural Louisiana’s 24.2 percent, which is nearly a quarter of all rural residents.

Forced to pay for abortion drugs?

in
Gallagher, Maggie.jpg

Can the government order you to pay for anything if it calls it “health care?”
Can President Obama make you choose between your religious faith and your health care coverage?
Enter Senate bill 1467, the “Respect for Rights of Conscience Act.” The bill, introduced by Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., would repeal the most intrusive part of the Obamacare power grab: the authority Obamacare gives the federal government to compel religious people and faith groups to subsidize as “health care” whatever a government wants.
