RGSA sets registration on Saturday

The Ruston Girls Softball Association is currently registering for the spring softball season.
Registration for the 2012 season began last weekend and individuals interested in being a part of the popular program will also have the opportunity to do so on Saturday from 9 a.m.-noon.
Registration forms can also be picked up at the Ruston Locker Room or logging on to the organization’s website at www.rustonsoftball.com. The RGSA offers softball for girls ages 5-18.

Be wary of depression

We are fortunate to have an educational resource for mental health in our community.
Each month, the Ruston Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness brings in a different speaker to discuss various issues pertaining to mental health. Most recently, NAMI hosted Mary Jo Fitz-Gerald, professor of clinical psychiatry and vice-chair for psychiatry education at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport.

Puzzles, emotions revisited

When I was younger, my grandmother introduced me to many things: Beanie Babies, hot water cornbread, and most importantly, jigsaw puzzles.
No, we did not put together just any puzzle either.
Our puzzles ranged anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 pieces. Usually they were landscapes or pictures of beautiful flower gardens, and pretty much every piece looked the same.

Jindal budget full of problems

It may be a good thing that Bobby Jindal is a lame-duck governor. The 2012-13 budget he’s proposed to the Louisiana Legislature is bound to make a lot of people mad.
Among other things, Jindal’s asking state workers to work more years for less benefits, and, in some cases, sacrifice their jobs all together.
He’s proposing to sell a state prison in Avoyelles Parish, close prisons in Pineville and Keithville, hire a private company to run Louisiana’s state employee health-care plan in the Office of Group Benefits, privatize two facilities that care for the developmentally disabled, eliminate ferry boat operations in two south Louisiana towns and privatize ferries in three others. The closures and privatizations would cost up to 2,700 people their jobs, something that may not be too popular in the current economy.

John Earl Jones

John Earl Jones, age 96, died early Monday morning at his home in Rock Hill, SC. Born in Arcadia, LA to Bertha Hays Jones and John Earl Jones in 1915, Mr. Jones was a long-time resident of Charlotte who moved to Rock Hill in 2010 to be closer to family. Mr. Jones is survived by his two sons, John E. Jones, Jr. (Gloria) of Rock Hill and William Pike Jones (Susan) of Charlotte.

Ben Simmers

A celebration of the life of Ben Simmers will be from 2-5 p.m., Saturday, February 25, 2012, at his residence for family and friends.

Ben was born April 28, 1938 in Whitley County, IN. He entered into rest Friday, February 10, 2012, in Shreveport, LA. Ben was retired from Ball-Foster Glass Manufacturing Company after many years of faithful service. He was a veteran of the Marine Corp where he proudly served his country. Ben was a graduate of Columbia City High School, Columbia City, IN.

Omelia Street Mitchell

Omelia Street Mitchell was born in Simsboro, Louisiana, November 3rd 1940, to the late John D. and Armelia Gipson Street and died on February 15, 2012. She was the fifth of their six children. Omelia accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized at an early age and united with the Spring Hill Baptist Church.
