Valius earns board certification in sleep medicine from ABMS

Mary Beth Valiulis is now board certified in sleep medicine after successfully completing the Sleep Medicine Certification Exam held by the American Board of Medical Specialties.  She is the first and only private practice psychiatrist board certified in both psychiatry and sleep medicine in North Louisiana. 
According to the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, there are only 181 physicians in the country with these qualifications.

Be wary of teen dating violence

When one is a teenager, a dating partner can seem like the most important thing in the world.
There may be pressure to have a date to the dance or be in a relationship. Sometimes, however, teens can be so eager to get into or remain in a relationship that they make decisions that put themselves in emotional or physical danger.
February marks Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. This is a time for anyone who comes in contact with teens in a leadership role, whether parents, older siblings, mentors or church leaders, to make sure young people understand what is healthy within a relationship.

For a decade, Louisiana has been shaping a management system in somewhat belated appreciation of the value of its abundant supplies. This is a “big deal,” state Representative Jim Fannin told the Sparta Commission two years ago. “It will take everyone to work this out.”

Remembering favorite U.S. presidents

Presidents’ Day is observed tomorrow, the third Monday in February. (I still do not like the name change from that of Washington’s birthday.)
Presidents’ Day is one of the holidays observed following the adoption of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. Two federal holidays are named after persons who were not president.

Woman addresses aquifer issue

Louisiana Office of Conservation Commissioner James Welsh plans to wait until at least late this year to decide on a request from the Baton Rouge Metro Council for a hearing to address saltwater intrusion into a city drinking water aquifer. 
A study from the U.S. Geological Survey on the saltwater intrusion issue is to be completed in October.
Eugene Owen, of Baton Rouge, director/chairman  of  Utility  Holdings, Baton Rouge Water,  Parish Water,  Ascension  Water  and LAWCO, New Iberia, stated that they are running out of time. Owen is very experienced and was even reappointed to the Capital Area Groundwater Conservation District.

GSU receives Reynolds Foundation grant

The Department of Mass Communication at Grambling State University is in rarefied company, being the smallest program among the more than 30 universities in the country that competed for the $50,000 Reynolds Foundation Visiting Business Journalism Professor Program grant.
The grant proposal was submitted by Martin Edu, chair of the department. Other journalism programs whose grant proposals were also selected included Colorado State University, Texas Christian University and the University of South Carolina.
The grant was sponsored by the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism at Arizona State University from a $1.67 million grant received from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation to promote business journalism. This is the first phase of the annual competitive awards to be made to colleges and universities over the five-year life of the grant.

French Creative wins gold at MarCom Awards

French Creative Group captured a Gold MarCom Award in the recent international 2011 MarCom Awards competition for its “On the Wings of a Hero” marketing campaign promoting the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum’s fundraising gala and banquet benefiting the museum’s planned expansion.
There were more than 6,000 entries from the United States, Canada and several other countries in the competition. Entrants ranged from ad agencies and PR firms to media conglomerates and Fortune 500 companies.

Lumpkin named treasurer of LIDEA

Northern Louisiana economic developer and North Louisiana Economic Partnership partner, Kristi Lumpkin, was elected treasurer of Louisiana Industrial Development Executive Association this year. Lumpkin served last year as secretary for the group.
She is also the economic development administrator for the City of Ruston and prior to that worked for Louisiana Economic Development in Baton Rouge and for Acadiana Economic Development in Lafayette.

High schoolers’ academic excellence honored

The annual Academic Awards Banquet was held Feb. 13. Listed are the names of all students who were honored at the banquet. In order to be recognized, students had to have been a Lincoln Parish student for one full academic year, earned at least a 3.5 grade point average and taken certain classes set forth by guidelines. The awards were based on the school year ending May 2011.
Students awarded (listed by number of years they have received the award) at each school were as follows:
