1982 state champion Bearcats honored

Ruston High School’s 1982 football team that captured a Louisiana High School Athletic Association state championship for Class 4A was honored during the Bearcats’ recent home game against West Monroe. The 1982 Bearcats were directed by Louisiana Sports Hall of Famer head coach Jimmy “Chick” Childress.

Don't be an apathetic voter

I am going to end this column like I begin it with a statement that resembles an aphorism, but also is viewed as a com­mon sense-ism, yet people — many my age — respond to this statement in a very nonsensical way; therefore, making it a para­dox in nature that everyone agrees upon, yet one that many — again, those my age — do not live by, and it is this: There is nothing worse for a citizen than to be an apa­thetic voter.

Louisiana Tech University President Dan Reneau delivered the keynote address recently at the 2012 National Banquet of Alpha Eta Mu Beta (AEMB) — the National Biomedical Engineering Honor Society he founded in 1979 while leading the biomedical engineering department at Tech.

Dr. James Carroll Farrar

Services celebrating the life of Dr. James Carroll Farrar will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 3, 2012, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral. Officiating will be Father Andrew Comeaux with eulogy by Dr. Donald A. Webb. Interment will follow in Forest Park East Cemetery, St. Vincent Avenue.

Visitation will be at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall Street from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 2. There will be a second visitation prior to the funeral service at St. Marks Cathedral in the Church Parlor from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m.

Virgie Bagwell (Vickie) Faison

Funeral services for Mrs. Virgie Bagwell (Vickie) Faison, age 86 of Port Orchard, Washington, formerly of Shreveport, will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, November 3, 2012 at Fellowship Baptist Church in Dubach with Rev. Paul Watts and Bo Roberts officiating. Burial will follow in Fellowship Cemetery under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.

Margie Jean McElduff

Funeral services for Margie Jean McElduff, age 77, of Choudrant will be held Saturday, November 3, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston. Officiating the service will be Rev. Karl Norris. Interment will follow at Cartwright Cemetery near Choudrant, under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.

Ms. McElduff was born September 25, 1935 in Eros, LA and passed away October 31, 2012 following complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

With individuals from different areas of the globe present, the Louisiana Tech University’s International Student Office, along with the International Student Association, held its annual International Student Scholarship Night on Oct. 27.
“As of this quarter, Tech has 68 countries being represented on campus,” said Dan Erickson, director of international student and scholar services.
“This is our 14th year to hold this dinner, and we have raised more than $75,000.”

M.L. Smith remembered

Local businessman will be missed by community

The founder of a long-standing local business passed away earlier this week.
M.L. Smith Jr. died Sunday at the age 82.
In 1984, Smith and his children formed M.L. Smith, Jr, Inc. (now LLC), located on Louisiana Highway 33.
According to its website, M.L. Smith, Jr., LLC operates nationwide constructing Tanks and Refractories.
Tim Taunton, general manager of steel operations for the company, remembers Smith as a very fair and driven individual who was hands-on involved in teaching and mentoring his employees to carry on the company as he would have wanted it to be.
