Tech bowlers: A tough test

Jackson’s squad in strong Mid-Winter Classic

The Louisiana Tech University bowling team (20-19) returns to action after a month-long hiatus, as Tech travels to Jonesboro, Ark., to compete in the Mid-Winter Classic that begins today and continues through Sunday.
The Lady Techsters will faces their toughest schedule yet, as the 17-team field includes seven of the top-10 teams in the land and eight of the top-20 teams according to the National Tenpin Coaches Association Poll.
Defending national champion and fourth-ranked Maryland Eastern Shore and top-ranked Valparaiso University are among the teams competing in the Mid-Winter Classic.

Help babies by supporting March of Dimes

North Louisiana has a serious problem with premature births. Whereas nationwide, one in eight babies arrive early — before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy — the rate in this region is one in four.
According to the March of Dimes website, premature babies are at increased risk for newborn health complications, such as breathing problems and even death. Additionally, premature babies also face an increased risk of lasting disabilities, such as mental retardation, learning and behavioral problems, cerebral palsy, lung problems and vision and hearing loss.

Focus on real change this year

Change. This one word may bolster thoughts of progress sweeping through an area, thoughts of hesitation for abandoning old ways or it simply may make you think of those little silver and copper coins that sit in your pocket, dangling away while you walk to where you need to be.
Regardless of what thoughts pop into your head when the word “change” is muttered, change is exactly what seems to be on the agenda for everyone finding themselves a citizen of this state and country for the year 2012.

Court slaps down Obama's religion doctrine

Lost in the political shuffle in New Hampshire was an epic U.S. Supreme Court decision this week in Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School v Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
By an astounding, unanimous 9-0 margin, the usually ideologically divided Supreme Court slapped down President Obama’s radical doctrine that the federal government can tell a church who it must employ as a minister if the church violates anti-discrimination employment provisions.

ECU challenges First Amendment

A sure way to prepare future journalists for the real world is to test their First Amendment rights and eventually bring about a lawsuit.
There have been several cases where students have sued educational institutions for repressing their rights as American citizens. Recently the news staff and adviser from East Carolina University experienced the repercussions that come with being a student.

Family escapes house blaze

Officials are investigating a blaze that severely damaged a house Thursday night.
According to Ruston Fire Department Public Education Officer Eric Brazzel, at approximately 10:48 p.m. Thursday, the RFD received a call of a house on fire on South Barnett Springs Road.
Brazzel said a family was sleeping in the house, when they smelled smoke, woke up and got out of the house. No one was injured.

Burglars caught red-handed?

Three Ruston residents were arrested for theft Thursday afternoon after the residents of a home being burglarized came home early, foiling the alleged burglars’ plot.
Jonath Caleb Patton, 36, of 810 Madden Road, Jason Freeman Owens, 33, of 2402 Louisiana Highway 151, and Amanda Pauline Reese, 27, of 810 Madden Road, were all arrested and charged with theft over $500 and criminal trespassing. Patton was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
