The Lincoln Parish School Board Office, 410 South Farmerville Street, Ruston, LA will accept bids for the clearing of a twelve acre tract of land in Simsboro. The property is located to the east of Rose Street and north of Highway 80. Bids will be accepted until 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at which time they will be opened. Complete specifications and requirements for this project may be obtained from the office of the Superintendent at 410 South Farmerville Street, during regular business hours of 8:00 – 4:30 p.m. Monday – Friday.

Kilpatrick new board chairman

Ruston banker Ryan Kilpatrick is the 2012 chairman of the Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce board of directors.
New board members as of the first of the year are Alana Babb, Donnie Bell, Kathy Crowder, Rick Emerson, Aaron Paul, and Russell Moore.
Other Chamber officers for 2012 are Jathan Maricelli, chairman-elect; Pixie Kees, vice chair, community development; Aaron Paul, vice chair, economic development; Richard Raue, vice chair, organizational development, and Kenny Galyean, vice chair, program development.

Recycling progress slow

With the exception of the new recycling bins found on Alabama Avenue next to the old Temple Baptist Church — now the Lincoln Parish Police Jury Complex — recycling initiatives are at a standstill in Ruston, according to local officials.
In conjunction with the Ruston 21 movement and the City of Ruston, the Lincoln Parish Police Jury has been placing greater emphasis on recycling in this area, but recently with limited success.

Tech ranked among top 100 best values

Kiplinger’s, one of the nation’s most popular and respected personal finance publications, has named Louisiana Tech University one of the Top 100 Best Values in Public Colleges for 2011-12.
This year’s rankings list Tech along with Louisiana State University as the only public institutions in Louisiana to make the top 100. It is also the third time in the past four years that Tech has made Kiplinger’s Top 100 list.

Coffee house, arts council to present exhibit

On Feb. 5 from 2-4 p.m., the North Central Louisiana Arts Council and Crescent City Coffee will present “Assembling Intimacy,” an exhibition of recent work by regional artist Bess Bieluczyk.
Area residents are invited to join NCLAC and artist Bieluczyk in a look into domestic life captured through the use of photography.
When asked about her artwork Bieluczyk replied, “I've been living in the same house for over four years, the longest I've lived in one place since I moved out of my parents' house. Being settled, especially with a partner, has forced me to deal with my anxieties about domesticity and ‘settling down.’”

’Dogs at center stage Friday

Louisiana Tech University’s football team gets some postseason attention at the Ruston Civic Center on Friday night.
The setting: a celebration of the Bulldogs’ outstanding 2011 campaign that featured an outright Western Athletic Conference championship and berth in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.
Not to mention honorable mention votes in the USA Today coaches’ poll, a seven -game winning streak and two of the top individual awards on the All-WAC squad.

Clemson transfer: Future impact for Tech

Weatherspoon sees future pro potential in point guard

Louisiana Tech University head coach Teresa Weatherspoon has announced that former Clemson guard Kelia Shelton has enrolled in classes for the winter quarter in Ruston and has joined the Lady Techster basketball program.
Although Shelton, a native of Rock Hill, S.C., began practicing immediately in mid-December with the team, she will have to sit out a year due to the NCAA transfer rules.
