FBC hosts concert

in

“The Louisiana Baptist Singing Ministers” will perform in special concert at First Baptist Church, located at 200 S. Trenton St. at 7 p.m., Thursday under the direction of Herb Armentrout.
The concert is free and open to the community.
The 40-person group is composed of ministers of music who serve in Baptist churches all across the State of Louisiana. Armentrout serves as the minister of music at Broadmoor Baptist Church in Shreveport.

GRAMBLING — Grambling State University’s football program is having plenty to brag about concerning their 2011 season.
There was a super finish to a slow start (four losses in first five games before rallying for wins in the final seven contests), culminating in a Southwestern Athletic Conference championship.
And with it has come numerous individual honors, among them Doug Williams being chosen as the Coach of the Year and linebacker Cliff Exama being tagged as the Defensive Player of the Year for the conference and wideout Mario Louis as the Newcomer of the Year in Louisiana.

Super Bowl ends another NFL season

Well, it wasn’t how I had wanted to see the National Footbal League Season end, but it’s over for now and the next time you will be able to enjoy any pigskin action will be at the NFL combine and draft coming up in the next few months.
Aside from that, it’s going to be all downhill for football fans until the summer starts winding down.
While it wasn’t my idea of a perfect Super Bowl game, I did enjoy the experience that I have grown accustom to over the years that goes along with the Super Bowl.

Memorial fund set for Duplessis

Louisiana Tech University has announced that a memorial fund has been set up and a public memorial service scheduled later this week in honor of recently deceased running back Tyrone Duplessis.
The Bulldogs’ sophomore running back passed away last Thursday morning at the age of 21.
A public memorial service has been scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center on the Tech campus for family, friends, teammates, fellow students, fans and alumni to honor his memory.

Battle of ranked teams

Simsboro High’s LeRaycio Smith (with basketball) dribbles against Daniel Simmons (white jersey) of Choudrant during a showdown of Top 15 Class B/C state ranked teams this past weekend. Clifford Williams (35) and Ron Abney (24) were among the Simsboro players setting up for a possible assist from Smith in the District 1-B contest. The No. 10 ranked Aggies took a 40-37 victory over the No. 11 Tigers. Choudrant is at home against Forest and Simsboro plays host to Summerfield in action tonight.

Joe Carroll Backus

A Celebration of His Life Memorial Service for Joe Carroll Backus, age 82, of Ruston, will be held at 10 a.m. February 11, 2012 at Cook Baptist Church in Ruston, La. Dr. Mike Holloway will officiate the service.

Mr. Backus was born in Springdale, Arkansas on Dec. 25, 1929 and died on February 1, 2012 in Ruston, La.

Mr. Joe Backus graduated from Springdale High School in 1947, and then attended Monticello A&M with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1960. He later graduated from Southwestern Theological Seminary with a Masters of Religious Education in 1962.
