The missed opportunity of 2008

We have all read those stories many times. The professional athlete or new pop idol makes a fortune and in no time spends it all and is worse off than they were before riding the wave of fame.
Prior to the two hurricanes in 2005, state generated revenue stood at about $9 billion. The initial adverse impact on Louisiana’s economy forced the Legislature to lop off $900 million in spending after the storms to balance the budget. That was done with few if any state employees losing their jobs and no medical or educational institutions being forced to close.

FBLA claims district championships

Ruston High School claimed the most district conference championships at the Future Business Leaders of America District II conference held at the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Feb. 9. RHS won 10 district titles as they recorded their best championship finish ever at the district level. As RHS hosted the event with ULM, part of their duties having the District II Vice President Jared Spiller, it seemed only fitting that RHS performed well.

Mini-Grants given to teachers by PTA

Now wrapping up its fifth year of financial support for Ruston High School teachers through its Mini-Grant Program, the Ruston High School Parent Teacher Association is proud to announce the initiative provided $5,945 in funding during the 2011-12 academic year.
RHS PTA and Lincoln ACHIEVE have remained partners in an effort to support Ruston High School as it endeavors to become the best high school in Louisiana at preparing students for their chosen path following graduation. In addition, the partnership has maintained its commitment to increase support by funding more mini grants throughout the year.

Students celebrate Valentine’s Day

Kindergarten news
The kindergarten classes exchanged Valentine’s Day cards with each other. We would like to thank Trinity Church for our snacks on Valentine’s Day. In class we are learning to sound out and spell words. We are writing sentences using our “Being a Writer” program. The teachers would like the parents to read a book to their child each night.

On Feb. 10, 132 students in first through fifth grades at Glen View Elementary participated in Jump Rope for Heart. Together they raised $5,736.31. All proceeds will be sent to the American Heart Association to help fight heart disease. Pictured are the fourth graders who participated.

’Dogs host Spartans tonight

And then it’s back on the road to finish up the regular season portion of the 2011-12 regular season for the Louisiana Tech University basketball Bulldogs.
With two wins in as many attempts on the Karl Malone Court of the Thomas
Assembly Center last week, the young and hustling ‘Dogs are on their home court again tonight and then Saturday for Western Athletic Conference assignments.

Three parish girls’ teams: region duels

Dubach High’s girls are No. 1 in the state’s Class C basketball power rankings, plus finished No. 6 in the Louisiana Sports Writers Association poll for its class.
But the Lady Hornets have several more important things to add to their impressive resume this season.
One is that Dubach will host Ebarb (15-22) in a regional round Louisiana High School Athletic Association playoff contest tonight.

Bulldogs win, 11-9

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Louisiana Tech University relief pitchers combined to strike out four batters and allow just four hits over 6.2 innings of play and Sam Alvis hit what proved to be the game-winning RBI double to left field in the bottom of the seventh, as the Bulldogs rallied past Arkansas-Little Rock 11-9 Wednesday afternoon at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock.

Techsters’ track team open defense of WAC crown

Louisiana Tech University’s women dropped three spots to No. 33, but still stayed ahead of several BCS powers, as the latest track and field national and regional rankings that were announced by the NCAA on Wednesday.
The Lady Techsters will put that rankings and a streak of six Western Athletic Conference Indoor titles in the last seven years on the line at the league’s annual title meet in Boise, Idah, starting today.
