Enrollment increases; new program started

Principal’s message
We are excited about our new school year. With almost 300 students, we are thrilled to have an increase in enrollment. The teachers at I.A. Lewis are the most dedicated, most professional people I know. Sixth graders will learn so much this year as they make the many adjustments to middle school.

Students participate in summer research program

From June 20-30, students and teachers from Grambling High School were invited to participate in the Minority Leader Program of Sensors Technical Thrust Research. This was a high school Outreach Applied Research Initiative that was provided by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Grambling State University.

Sigma Kappa welcomes new members into sorority

The Beta Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Kappa Sorority at Louisiana Tech University proudly welcomed 41 new members to their sisterhood on Sept. 11 in Ruston.
During fall formal membership recruitment, Sigma Kappa members entertained, informed and got to know more than 160 potential new members discussing topics such as philanthropies, values and sisterhood.

Students ‘Adopt a Hero’

In memory of 9/11, the Cedar Creek fourth classes conducted a service project they called “Adopt a Hero.” The students collected snacks for Ruston’s Police and Fire Departments.

Toodles Originals Children’s Boutique, located at 1017 Louisiana Highway 33 (Farmerville Highway), opened in June and has quickly grown.
The owner, Tara Hafield, makes handsewn garments with the help of her assistant, Frances Sepulvado, for children from infant to 6 years old. The store carries a wide selection of outfits to choose from, such as the popular tater sack dresses, sassy pants, bubble rompers for girls and plaid shorts and overalls for boys.

Jerald David Broughton

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Jerald David Broughton on September 14, 2011, in Jackson, Mississippi. Jerald was born in Hico, Louisiana, on November 30, 1935, the first son of the late Theron Carlton Broughton and Iva Lee Bennett Broughton. Jerald was also predeceased by his daughter, Faye Broughton, and his brother, Jack Wayne Broughton. Jerald was also preceded in death by his father- and mother-in law, John and Vernice Mobley, and two brothers-in-law, John Allen Mobley and Jerry Don Mobley.

Jean Moreland Sikes

Jean Moreland Sikes of Ruston, LA died Saturday, September 10, 2011 at North Louisiana Medical Center at the age or 84. Mrs. Sikes was born in Sweetwater, Texas on August 25, 1927 and moved with her family to Meridian, Mississippi where she grew up. She married her high school sweetheart, Jack Sikes in 1946, and in 1969 they moved their family to Louisiana. Mrs. Sikes worked many years as a legal secretary at the Walker & Holstead law firm as well as at Louisiana Tech. Later, she worked with Mr. Sikes to begin the Yellow Pine Lumber Co. in Monroe where they lived a number of years.
