‘Jam at Joe’ set for big Saturday

Plenty of questions to ponder as five-game grid fest nears

With the nearing of another football season, there is always big questions to be asked.
Here’s some presented by the Daily Leader involving the participating teams in Saturday’s third annual “Jam at the Joe,” to be held at Joe Aillet Stadium on the campus of Louisiana Tech University:
1-Will two Shreveport powers, Evangel Academy and Calvary Baptist, continue their success in not only North Louisiana circles, but the entire state?
It sure looks that way.

Green: ‘Coach Robertson was a good guy’

Mike Green lost what he called a “father-like figure” late last week.
On Thursday morning, former Louisiana Tech University head men’s basketball coach Scotty Robertson passed away at the age of 81.
Green was the best player during a golden era of the Bulldogs’ program in the early 1970s, during a time in which Robertson directed the team to a No. 1 national ranking among college divisions programs and to three Gulf States Conference championships.

District 5 team sets victory record

Louisiana’s District 5 squad established an all-time record for most victories in a season recently with a 36-5 mark that featured a sixth consecutive appearance in the Big League World Series. The team also captured the championship of the Southern College Preparatory League at 22-3.

Ruston’s Martie Cordaro earns pro baseball award

OMAHA, Neb. — Building a new ballpark and successfully rebranding a franchise are always huge accomplishments; the fact that Martie Cordaro and Alan Stein managed to do both despite some pretty steep odds wins them recognition as Baseball’s Executives of the Year from Ballpark Digest.
In some ways professional baseball was an afterthought when the city of Omaha and the NCAA embarked on planning for a new College World Series ballpark.

James Robert Sumlin, Sr.

James Robert Sumlin, Sr. was born in Simsboro, Louisiana on Sept. 12, 1927 and passed away in Ruston August 20, 2011 at 83 years of age. He graduated from Simsboro High School and attended Louisiana Tech University and Centenary College. He was in the furniture upholstering business for over 50 years in Shreveport and Ruston.

Mr. Sumlin was the oldest living past Master of the Caddo Masonic Lodge, member of the Toastmasters’ Club of Shreveport, and past President of the Ruston Rotary Club. He enjoyed playing dominoes with his domino group and enjoyed working on machinery.
