Eye health is important, too

Unless you’re like me and you’ve had to wear glasses since you first stuck your nose in a book at the age of 4, chances are that a trip to the eye doctor isn’t on your list of must do items each year.
Of course, that probably means you’re in the lucky 25 percent (according to the Vision Council of America) of the American population that doesn’t need some sort of eye correction. But then, it’s also possible that you’re more like my husband who thinks that you don’t need to visit the eye doctor until his glasses break or until prescription changes so obviously that it begins to impede daily life.

Woman accused of stealing refund check

A woman was booked into the Lincoln Parish Detention Center on Tuesday on a charge of theft after she allegedly routed another woman’s tax refund check into her own account.
Demetrice Monique Dade, 30, of 2311 6th Street in Arcadia, was booked into the Lincoln Parish Detention Center on a charge of theft over $1,500. Bond was set at $7,000.

Coach Mize receives award

Coach James W. “Jimmy” Mize received the Lions Club International Melvin Jones Fellowship Award from Ruston Lions Club President Stephanie Griffin. The award is named in honor of Melvin Jones who founded Lions Club in 1917, and is generally reserved for those Lions who have shown extraordinary dedication to the guiding principles of Lions Clubs. Coach Mize has been a member of the Ruston Lions Club since 1948 and has served the club with distinction.

Livas: Big return for Miami

Ex-Tech star makes quick impact for Dolphins

The opportunities will be minimal, and Miami Dolphins’ wide receiver Phillip Livas knows it. That’s why, after losing his balance on a kickoff return during Friday’s preseason debut, he headed to the sideline with a promise to himself and to his team.
“I told the team that if I was going to get another chance, I would make the best of it,” Livas said.

‘Jam at Joe’ tickets available at schools

“It’s a good way to save and also help the schools,” said Billy Laird, head coach at Ruston High. “Our fans can purchase their jamboree tickets now at the school office.”
Other schools set for the event to be held at Joe Aillet Stadium include Cedar Creek, Farmerville, Minden, Homer, Haynesville, Jonesboro-Hodge, Shreveport Loyola, Shreveport Evangel Academy and Shreveport Calvary Baptist.

Valla Mae McDow Waits

Funeral services will be held for Valla Mae McDow Waits, 93, at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 18, 2011, at First Baptist Church in Arcadia. Rev. Jeff Hoffman will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. The interment will follow at Hurricane cemetery.

Funeral services for John Larry Rabb, age 85, will be held at 10:30am on Aug. 18 in the chapel of Centuries Memorial Funeral Home, Shreveport, La. Officiating will be Bro. John Harp, Associate Pastor of Brookwood Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8pm on Wed. Aug. 17 at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be held at 3pm on Thursday at Cook Town Cemetery in Ruston, La.
