Figs, tomatoes wash in troubles

in
Maki, Ken.jpg

We finally received some showers of rain. They were scattered. It depended on where you were standing on how much you received.
It reminded me of a Justin Wilson story about a dove hunt he went on up in the “Miss-sippy” Delta. The weather forecast was for scattered showers and they were receiving some. To get to his field he had to go through a barbed wire fence. He unloaded his double barrel 12-gauge shot gun and leaned it against the fence and a shower came up. By the time he got through the fence and reached back to get his gun, one barrel was full of water and the other one was still dry!

’Dogs defense hopes to be big hit

in
080211 Tech defense C.jpg

Statistically speaking, Louisiana Tech’s defense has plenty of room for improvement in 2011 and progress is expected to be made especially with the team’s top four tacklers returning. But numbers can be deceiving and Tech’s defense did have several strong aspects to it last year, especially against the run. For the second straight season, Tech held Navy’s potent triple option rushing offense to under 300 yards and kept Southern Miss’ offense in check in a 13-12 nail biter of a game.

Harsh temps have arrived

A severe heat wave has arrived, with high temperatures moving into the triple digits on Monday. And as the week goes on, it’s expected to only get hotter.
According to the National Weather Service, afternoon high temperatures will climb into the 102-107 degrees range this week. It is reportedly even possible that some areas could see temps of 107 or higher by midweek, which would be approaching all-time record highs for this area.

Gardening, vegetables grown easy

in
 Hwy 167 Crash 7-20-11.jpg

Thinking about vegetable gardening this spring, what about raised bed gardening?
Traditionally, to grow your own fresh vegetables we often thought that we had to have a back forty acres or some large area to plant, along with equipment such as a tractor or tiller, which is not necessarily true. A garden salad can be produced in small raised bed 4 feet by 4 feet gardens or even in containers. This is what we have set up to do with school and community gardens throughout Northern Louisiana.

Power of attorney and illness

in
Bleich, Joe C.jpg

(In the past two columns we have been examining what I prefer to call “life planning.” Last week I spent some time discussing having, or not, a last will and testament. We also discussed the need to examine your applicable insurance. In every event, I emphasize that this is not a time in life to engage in “do it yourself” document preparation. The ramifications are too broad and serious.)
