Krieg, Smith earn high national rankings in final NCAA report

Despite finishing in the lower half of their conference standings, Lincoln Parish’s two collegiate softball teams had lofty rankings in the final NCAA statistical report announced for Division I on Wednesday.
Louisiana Tech University pitcher Meghan Krieg and Grambling State University catcher Taylour Smith and infielder/pitcher Angela Perez placed in the Top 30 of various departments.
Krieg was No. 26 in total strikeouts with 269, Smith rated No. 24 in hit by pitch per game with an 0.3 average and Perez ranked No. 14 in total triples with five.

Alsup solid in early professional appearance

Ben Alsup is off to a good start in his professional baseball career.
It’s so far, so good for the former Ruston High two-sport standout who played for the LSU diamond squad the past four seasons.
Alsup, drafted in round No. 18 of the recent Major League Baseball draft, had five strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter during four innings of a recent start for the Colorado Rockies’ Tri-City (Wash.) Dust Devils’ team in Class A.

Tax preparer pleads guilty to filing false claims for refunds

United States Attorney Stephanie A. Finley announced that Sonya L. Muhammad, 32, of Calhoun, pleaded guilty this week to filing false claims for federal income tax refunds.
Muhammad was indicted by a federal grand jury in December 2010 on 31 counts of aiding and assisting in making false returns and one count of structuring. In May 2011, a superseding indictment was returned adding six more counts of filing false returns.
Muhammad owns and operates a tax return preparation business in West Monroe. At the change of plea hearing this week, Muhammad admitted to preparing and filing tax returns at her business knowing that the returns contained material false claims.

NCLAC announces $10,000 winner

On June 19, the North Central Louisiana Arts Council (NCLAC) held the grand prize drawing for $10,000, which concluded its annual Keep the Arts Afloat fundraiser.
A total of 250 tickets were sold at $100 each to arts supporters across the region, raising $15,000 to support NCLAC and its programs.
The drawing was held during the opening reception for NCLAC’s 24th Annual Peach Festival Art Exhibition and confirmed Josh and Rachel Shirley, of Ruston, as the lucky winners.

Marjorie Sharpe Diamond

A memorial visitation for Marjorie Sharpe Diamond, 92 of Ruston will be from 6PM until 8PM Saturday, July 9, 2011 in the chapel of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. Mrs. Diamond was born January 1, 1919 in Guymon, OK and died July 2, 2011 in Ruston.
